SHEQ Advisor
The SHEQ Advisor will provide proactive Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality support across a major infrastructure project, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, client standards, company procedures and industry best practice. The role is predominantly project based, splitting time between the Glasgow office and operational construction sites.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety
- Provide competent SHEQ advice and guidance to project management teams.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits and behavioural safety observations.
- Monitor compliance with company procedures, client standards and UK health and safety legislation.
- Assist in the review and development of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
- Support temporary works, lifting operations, excavations, work at height and other high‑risk activities.
- Promote positive safety behaviours through coaching and engagement.
- Assist with site inductions and SHEQ briefings.
- Support implementation of company campaigns and behavioural safety initiatives.
- Monitor subcontractor SHEQ performance and compliance.
- Ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented following inspections.
Environmental
- Promote compliance with environmental legislation and client requirements.
- Undertake environmental inspections.
- Monitor pollution prevention measures.
- Support waste management and environmental reporting.
- Assist with ecological, noise, dust and water management controls.
- Report environmental incidents and support investigations.
- Promote sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives.
Quality
- Support implementation of the Project Quality Management System.
- Participate in quality inspections alongside engineering teams.
- Monitor compliance with Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
- Assist with NCR investigations and close‑out.
- Promote Right First Time principles.
- Support project audits and client quality inspections.
Incident Management
- Support investigation of accidents, incidents, close calls and unsafe conditions.
- Assist with root cause analysis using recognised investigation methodologies (e.g. Kelvin TOP‑SET where appropriate).
- Monitor completion of corrective actions.
- Share learning across the project.
Assurance & Compliance
- Complete planned inspections and audits.
- Monitor compliance against Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, CDM Regulations 2015, Environmental Protection Act, PUWER, LOLER, Electricity at Work Regulations, Working at Height Regulations, COSHH, Manual Handling Operations Regulations and client requirements.
- Support external audits including ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.
Reporting
- Produce SHEQ reports and KPI data.
- Maintain inspection records.
- Monitor action trackers.
- Analyse trends.
- Escalate significant risks to the Project HSSEQ Manager.
Engagement
- Build positive working relationships with operational teams.
- Coach supervisors and managers.
- Participate in toolbox talks and stand‑down events.
- Promote workforce engagement initiatives.
- Support wellbeing campaigns.

Person Specification
- Essential: NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent).
- Experience in a SHEQ Advisor role within construction, utilities or infrastructure.
- Good knowledge of UK SHEQ legislation.
- Experience undertaking site inspections and audits.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to coach operational teams.
- Good report writing skills.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Willingness to travel extensively to project sites.
- Desirable: NEBOSH Construction Certificate, Internal Auditor qualification, IEMA Foundation Certificate, Temporary Works awareness, National Grid or SSEN experience, experience within power transmission, distribution or utilities, knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, incident investigation training (Kelvin TOP‑SET, ICAM or TapRooT), TechIOSH / GradIOSH membership, First Aid at Work, Mental Health First Aider.
