United Infrastructure Power T&D are seeking a Graduate Apprentice Civil Engineer based in Alness, Scotland.
The Role
Are you looking to build a long-term career in civil engineering, access road construction and infrastructure delivery?
We're looking for a motivated and ambitious Graduate Apprentice Civil Engineer to join our team and support the delivery of access roads and associated civil engineering works from our Alness project base.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about construction, infrastructure and the energy sector, and who is eager to gain hands‑on experience while working towards a recognised qualification.
You'll learn from experienced construction and engineering professionals and develop the technical knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to progress into a Civil Engineer, Site Engineer, Works Supervisor or Site Management role in the future.
- Typical Responsibilities
- Support the Site Manager, Project Manager and engineering team with the day-to-day delivery of access road and civil engineering works.
- Learn how access roads, temporary tracks, public road improvements and associated infrastructure are planned, coordinated and delivered safely.
- Assist with site inspections, surveys, measurements and basic setting out activities under supervision.
- Support the coordination of subcontractors, suppliers, site operatives and specialist trades.
- Assist with monitoring health, safety, environmental and quality compliance on site.
- Support quality checks to ensure works are completed in accordance with drawings, specifications, standards and client requirements.
- Help maintain site records, inspection sheets, progress reports, permits, risk assessments and project documentation.
- Learn how to read and interpret drawings, specifications, method statements, risk assessments and construction information.
- Assist with recording progress, identifying site issues and supporting the resolution of technical queries.
Support the management of materials, deliveries, plant movements and site logistics to help maintain efficient project delivery.
- Develop an understanding of earthworks, drainage, culverts, formation works, road construction, reinstatement, temporary works and environmental controls.
- Support the delivery of access works in rural, live and environmentally sensitive locations.
- Build positive relationships with clients, colleagues, subcontractors, landowners, residents and the wider project team.
- Assist in ensuring sites remain clean, safe, well-organised and considerate to local communities and the surrounding environment.
- Attend apprenticeship training and complete all required coursework, assessments and evidence submissions.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- 3 Scottish Highers at grades BBC or above including Maths plus one other STEM subject.
- 2 A levels at grades BC or above in Maths plus one other STEM subject.
- Alternatively, NC Civil Engineering or Foundation Apprenticeship Civil Engineering A relevant construction, civil engineering or built environment qualification would be advantageous but is not essential.
- Previous experience in construction, civil engineering, groundworks, highways, utilities, property maintenance, labouring, trades or a site-based environment would be beneficial but is not essential.
- CSCS Card, or willingness to obtain one.
- Basic understanding of drawings, measurements, construction materials or site safety would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of access roads, groundworks, drainage, earthworks, utilities or rural infrastructure would be beneficial but not essential.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn from experienced professionals.
- Reliable with excellent timekeeping and a professional approach to work.

- Good attention to detail and a willingness to follow procedures and instructions.
- Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Willingness to work on live construction sites and travel between project locations.
- Willingness to work outdoors and in remote or rural site environments.
