As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will lead the electrical design of HV and LV power distribution projects across the full project lifecycle — from feasibility and concept design through to detailed design, DNO approval, construction support, and commissioning.
This role requires strong technical expertise in adoptable network design (LV to 132kV) in line with DNO, IDNO, and ENA G81 standards, a high standard of design assurance, and the ability to mentor junior engineers while working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams.
You will work on infrastructure, renewable energy connections, substations, cable networks, and grid stability projects within the power industry.
- Electrical Design & Delivery
- Lead electrical design activities for HV/LV distribution networks including substations, underground cable routes, and overhead line interfaces.
- Produce and review detailed electrical designs, calculations, specifications, schedules, protection studies, and drawings.
- Develop compliant designs in accordance with DNO/IDNO standards, ENA G81, G99, and client specifications.
- Undertake feasibility studies, demand assessments, and optioneering for new connections and network reinforcement.
- Develop cost-effective, safe, and reliable electrical solutions through value engineering.
- Provide technical support during construction, commissioning, and energisation phases.
- Design and specify HV/LV substations up to 132kV.
- Develop protection schemes, discrimination studies, and interface with DNO protection requirements.
- Carry out earthing studies, lightning protection design, and cable sizing calculations.
- Produce single line diagrams, substation layouts, and cable routing drawings.
- Review supplier and contractor technical submissions and FAT/SAT documentation.
- Manage the technical submission and approval process with DNO/IDNOs.
- Ensure designs are fully compliant for adoption under G81 standards.
- Liaise directly with DNO engineers, ICP project teams, and clients throughout the design lifecycle.
- Support the production of Bills of Quantities (BoQ) and construction packs.
- Collaborate closely with civil, mechanical, and construction teams to deliver integrated substation and network designs.
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and risk assessments.
- Interface with clients, contractors, suppliers, and network operators.
- Mentor and technically support graduate and intermediate electrical engineers.
- Review and approve designs produced by others.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, templates, and best practices.
- Ensure full compliance with CDM regulations and design risk management.
Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering.
- Proven experience designing HV/LV networks within an ICP, DNO, IDNO, or consultancy environment.
- Strong understanding of ENA G81, G99, and DNO adoption requirements.
- Experience delivering designs from concept through to energisation and handover.
- Knowledge of relevant standards (BS, EN, IEC, DNO specifications).
Desirable
- Experience working on renewable energy or infrastructure connection projects.
- Site experience including commissioning and energisation support.
- Familiarity with NEC or similar engineering contracts.
