AFECO is an engineering services provider, delivering high quality process and MEICA design and installation projects predominantly across the South of England and Midlands for the water industry. We have excellent inhouse engineering teams capable of delivering all stages of the project cycle, from concept through to commissioning, with a strong focus on process led innovative and robust yet appropriate solutions. We have a portfolio of varied projects covering both wastewater and clean water projects for planned and reactive projects.

Role Purpose
The Senior Electrical Design Engineer will lead the electrical design of water and wastewater treatment assets across the full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to construction support and commissioning. The role requires strong technical expertise in electrical power and control systems, a high standard of design assurance, and the ability to mentor junior engineers while working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Electrical Design & Delivery
- Lead electrical design activities for water and wastewater infrastructure projects, including treatment works, pumping stations, and network assets.
- Produce and review electrical designs, calculations, specifications, schedules, and drawings.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards, legislation, client specifications, and health & safety requirements.
- Develop cost-effective, safe, and reliable electrical solutions through optioneering and value engineering.
- Provide technical support during construction, commissioning, and handover phases.
- Power, Control & Instrumentation
- Design and specify LV power distribution systems, MCCs, switchgear, UPS, and standby generation.
- Develop earthing, lightning protection, and cable sizing designs.
- Interface with ICA engineers on control systems, instrumentation, and telemetry requirements.
- Review supplier and contractor technical submissions and FAT/SAT documentation.
- Project & Stakeholder Interface
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, civil, process, and ICA disciplines to deliver integrated designs.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, and operations teams.
- Participate in design reviews, HAZID/HAZOP, constructability reviews, and risk assessments.
- Mentorship & Quality Assurance
- Mentor and technically support graduate and intermediate electrical engineers.
- Review and approve designs produced by others.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of standards, templates, and best practices.
Qualifications & Experience
- Essential
- Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering.
- Significant experience in the water or wastewater sector.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems used in water treatment and pumping applications.
- Experience delivering designs from concept through to construction and commissioning.
- Knowledge of relevant standards (e.g. BS 7671, BS EN, IEC, WIMES, client standards).
- Desirable
- Experience working on regulated water frameworks.
- Site experience including commissioning and fault-finding.
- Knowledge of functional safety and hazardous area design (where applicable).
- Familiarity with NEC or similar engineering contracts.
Technical Skills
- LV power system design and protection coordination.
- MCC and control panel specification.
- Earthing and lightning protection design.
- Electrical load schedules and cable calculations.
- 2D/3D CAD tools.
- Design risk assessments and CDM compliance.
