  • Role Purpose

The SHEQ Manager is responsible for leading, developing, and implementing the Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality (SHEQ) strategy across Transmission & Distribution projects.

The role ensures compliance with regulatory, client, and company standards, driving a culture of

Zero Harm , continuous improvement, and operational excellence across all activities, including high-voltage construction, maintenance, and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • SHEQ Leadership & Strategy
  • Lead the SHEQ function across Transmission & Distribution projects.
  • Develop and implement SHEQ strategy aligned with company objectives and client expectations.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture, reinforcing initiatives such as Zero Harm and Don’t Walk By.
  • Act as a key advisor to senior leadership on SHEQ risks and performance.
  • Compliance & Assurance

• Ensure compliance with

  • UK HSE legislation (e. g., HSWA, CDM Regulations)
  • Environmental regulations and permits
  • ISO standards (ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001)
  • Maintain and continuously improve the Integrated Management System (IMS).
  • Lead internal and external audits, ensuring successful outcomes and closure of actions.
  • Risk Management
  • Oversee hazard identification, risk assessment, and control measures across T&D activities.

• Ensure effective implementation of

  • Safe systems of work (SSo W)
  • Permit to work systems
  • Method statements and risk assessments (RAMS)

• Monitor high-risk activities such as

  • Working at height (towers/pylons)
  • Live HV environments
  • Lifting operations
  • Excavations and cable installation
  • Incident Management & Investigation
  • Lead the investigation of incidents, near misses, and non-conformances.
  • Identify root causes and implement corrective/preventative actions.
  • Ensure accurate reporting in line with RIDDOR requirements.
  • Analyse trends and provide actionable insights to prevent recurrence.
  • Environmental Management

• Ensure environmental protection across all works, including

  • Waste management
  • Pollution prevention
  • Biodiversity and habitat protection
  • Support sustainability initiatives and carbon reduction targets.
  • Quality Assurance
  • Ensure project delivery in line with quality standards and specifications.
  • Drive right-first-time culture across engineering and construction teams.
  • Monitor inspection and test plans (ITPs) and quality documentation.
  • Manage non-conformance reporting and corrective actions.
  • Training & Competence
  • Ensure workforce competence through training, assessment, and certification.
  • Deliver SHEQ training, briefings, and leadership coaching.
  • Support development of supervisors and managers in SHEQ responsibilities.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Liaise with clients (e. g., National Grid, DNOs), regulators, and external bodies.
  • Represent the company in audits, meetings, and SHEQ forums.
  • Influence subcontractors and supply chain partners to meet SHEQ standards.
  • Performance Monitoring & Reporting
  • Develop and track SHEQ KPIs and performance metrics.
  • Produce regular reports for senior management and clients.
  • Use data insights to drive continuous improvement.

Essential

Key Skills & Experience

• Significant SHEQ management experience within

  • Power Transmission & Distribution
  • Utilities, infrastructure, or construction sectors

• Strong knowledge of

  • High voltage safety practices
  • CDM Regulations and UK SHE legislation
  • Proven experience leading audits and managing ISO systems.
  • Demonstrable leadership and cultural change experience.
  • Incident investigation experience (e. g., root cause analysis).

Qualifications

  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) – Essential
  • ISO Lead Auditor (9001 / 14001 / 45001) – Desirable
  • Environmental qualification (IEMA) – Desirable
  • Professional membership (IOSH/IEMA) – Preferred
