United Infrastructure (UI) is a dynamic and rapidly expanding business, focused on delivering critical infrastructure projects. In early 2025, the UI Energy division was awarded a two-stage ECI engineering, procurement and construction project aimed at reducing emissions at Wormington Compressor Station, Gloucestershire. The EPC project scope includes the design, Balance of Plant (BOP) procurement, construction and commissioning of a new 15MW gas turbine compressor site, adjacent to the existing compressor site at Wormington. The project forms part of National Gas MCPD (Medium Combustion Plant Directive) programme to replace existing compressor units with new, state-of-the-art equipment.
Role Description: This is an EPC contractor, project-based role, reporting to the Project Technical Director. The Civil Engineering Manager will provide single-point leadership, assurance, and accountability for all Civil Engineering activities, ensuring that the design is safe, compliant, buildable, and fully aligned with the project's contractual and delivery objectives. The role spans the project lifecycle, from detailed design and pre-construction engineering, through construction support, and onward to commissioning and final handover.
Responsibilities of the position include:
- Provide Civil Engineering Management capabilities within the Project Leadership Team, working collaboratively with the Project Director, Technical Director, Mechanical Engineering Manager, Senior Project Manager, Commercial Manager, SHEQ Team and Planning Manager to ensure integrated project delivery.
- Ensure construction engineering operations undertaken through a combination of directly employed and subcontracted workforce are safety and effectively coordinated to deliver the project scope in accordance with contract requirements and project specific documentation.
- Act as the contractor's technical authority, ensuring the engineering solution is safe, compliant, buildable, and aligned with contractual, commercial, and programme objectives.
- Lead and coordinate multi-discipline engineering teams, ensuring effective integration of civil engineering with the mechanical, electrical, C&I, process, and gas systems design.
- Manage civil engineering delivery in accordance with UK gas regulations, applicable legislation, industry standards, codes of practice, and client asset specifications.
- Oversee and manage civil engineering interfaces with live and operational high-pressure gas assets, ensuring risks associated with works within the existing compressor station are identified, controlled, and mitigated in accordance with applicable project standards.
- Support formal safety and design assurance activities, including HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, HAZCON, design risk assessments, and constructability reviews.
- Provide technical oversight of subcontract design organisations and OEM/vendor packages, ensuring full integration with the overall design.
- Work collaboratively with the Project Director, Technical Director, Mechanical Engineering Manager, Construction Manager, Commercial team, and Client Design Coordinator to ensure engineering supports safe and efficient construction delivery.
- Provide ongoing civil engineering support during construction, resolving site-based technical issues promptly and pragmatically while maintaining compliance and design intent.
- Manage technical change control, assessing impacts on safety, cost, programme, and quality, and supporting NEC contract change processes where required.
- Support commissioning, testing, and entry-into-service activities, ensuring engineering deliverables, certifications, and handover documentation are complete and robust.
- Maintain effective communication with the client, regulators, independent reviewers, and other stakeholders on technical matters.
- Promote a strong culture of technical excellence, safety, and collaboration across the project delivery and design supply chain.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or Project Engineer on relevant major capital engineering projects, with a strong track record of delivery in the large-scale EPC project environment.
- Experience within UK high-pressure gas infrastructure is preferred; however, candidates with demonstrable experience in heavy engineering, piping, or process-based projects in regulated, safety-critical environments are encouraged to apply.
- Degree educated or equivalent in relevant engineering/technical discipline.
- Chartered Engineer or equivalent industry experience.
- Evidence of an ongoing commitment to professional and technical knowledge development.
- Possess an in-depth understanding of the design, engineering, vendor interface and construction engineering of high-pressure process piping systems, civil and structural elements and process control and safety systems.
- Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the project organisation, providing leadership in the application, compliance, and assurance of technical standards, procedures, and specifications.
- Equally comfortable working in a site-based environment, resolving design and engineering challenges in real time, as operating within the design office to develop and review technical solutions.
- Must be highly computer literate including Microsoft Office and applicable Design software associated with the role and confident in managing and working with large data sets and documents.
- Willing to travel between the Warrington, Woking, and Warwick offices, and from late 2026, to be site-based at Wormington Compressor Station in Gloucestershire during the working week.
- Valid driving licence.
- Fluent in the English Language.
