Unique opportunity available for an experienced Layout Designer to join an established and growing SME Architectural practice in Wakefield, specialising in the layout, design and technical delivery of new build housing for PLC housebuilders and regional developers across Yorkshire and nationwide.

The successful Layout Designer will be joining an ambitious well‐run practice, now well in its eighth year of trading. With a strong pipeline of secured work and continued growth, this is a key strategic hire that will play a pivotal role within the business, working closely with the Director and contributing to both project delivery and wider team development.

This role is ideally suited to a highly experienced Layout Designer with a strong background in residential development and a proven track record in producing high‐quality housing layouts for volume housebuilders. You will be confident in leading projects from initial concept and feasibility stages through to planning submission, with a keen eye for design, efficiency and placemaking.

We are looking for someone with a solid industry background (typically 5‐10+ years), gained within an architectural practice or residential developer environment. You will have demonstrable experience in designing and delivering housing layouts, managing your own workload, and mentoring junior team members where required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and development of residential site layouts from concept through to planning stages
  • Produce high‐quality planning layouts, site appraisals and feasibility studies
  • Work closely with clients, consultants and internal teams to deliver commercially viable and design‐led schemes
  • Prepare supporting drawings including location plans, street scenes and presentation material
  • Utilise AutoCAD to produce accurate and detailed layout drawings
  • Contribute to design reviews and offer creative input on new and existing schemes
  • Manage your own projects and assist in overseeing junior team members
  • Ability to write and produce Design and Access Statements
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships
Key Requirements
  • Proven experience in residential layout design, particularly for volume housing
  • Strong understanding of UK planning policy, design standards and housing guidelines
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD
  • Excellent design, presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines with a high level of accuracy
  • Confident in a client‐facing role with strong problem‐solving abilities
  • Ambitious, collaborative and motivated for long‐term progression
  • Full, clean UK Driving Licence held for a minimum of 2 years
  • Access to a reliable, registered, and insured vehicle for business use, no greater than 10 years old (mileage reimbursement provided)
  • Current business insurance coverage, or willingness to update policy to include business use upon employment
