Salary: Circa 35,000 (DOE)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (with evening & weekend on-call cover on a rota basis)
My client is seeking an experienced Senior Transport Planner to join a busy and well-established transport operation in Stockport. This is a key role within the operations team, responsible for planning and coordinating a general haulage fleet while ensuring compliance, efficiency, and strong commercial performance across both rigid and articulated vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and allocate transport resources effectively to ensure smooth daily operations and maintain service levels
- Adjust transport plans in response to operational changes, delays, or unexpected issues
- Communicate clearly with drivers regarding job allocations, updates, and end-of-day debriefs
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, always ensuring a high level of service
- Identify and develop opportunities to work with new customers and approved sub-contractors
- Make sound commercial decisions when allocating work to sub-contractors
- Ensure all vehicles and equipment are scheduled correctly and remain compliant with legal requirements
- Accurately update and maintain transport management system (TMS) records
- Work closely with internal departments to support smooth and efficient operations
- Provide out-of-hours support on a rota basis via telephone
- Carry out general administrative duties to support the wider team
Job skills required
- Strong understanding of driver hours and transport compliance regulations
- Good geographical knowledge of the UK road network
- Confident communicator, both written and verbal
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage changing priorities
- Comfortable working under pressure in a busy environment
- High attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of work
- Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and transport systems
- A team player who can also work independently when required
- Ability to build strong working relationships with drivers, customers, and suppliers
