A leading UK civil engineering contractor with an annual turnover exceeding 300m is looking to appoint an experienced Freelance Site Engineer to support delivery of a flagship 40m highways infrastructure scheme. The project includes a substantial package of highways works, deep drainage, reinforced concrete structures, earthworks, and associated infrastructure, offering a long‑term opportunity on a technically challenging civils scheme. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting day‑to‑day site operations, ensuring works are delivered safely, accurately, and in line with programme and specification requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out accurate setting out for highways, drainage, earthworks, and RC structure packages
- Supporting construction of reinforced concrete structures, including bases, retaining walls, culverts, chambers, slabs, and associated civils infrastructure
- Producing and maintaining detailed site records and survey information
- Managing QA procedures and completing inspection documentation including ITPs (Inspection Test Plans)
- Preparing and reviewing As‑Built records and drawings in line with client requirements
- Assisting with production and implementation of RAMs (Risk Assessments & Method Statements)
- Coordinating with subcontractors, supervisors, and project management teams to ensure smooth delivery of works
- Ensuring works are completed to specification, tolerances, and programme requirements
- Conducting quality inspections and resolving technical issues on site
- Supporting temporary works, permits, and site compliance procedures where required
- Maintaining high standards of health, safety, environmental, and quality compliance across all activities
Requirements
- Proven experience working as a Site Engineer on major highways or heavy civils projects
- Strong technical background in:
- Highways infrastructure
- Deep drainage
- Earthworks
- RC structures / reinforced concrete works
- Competent using Leica, Trimble, or similar setting out equipment
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and reinforcement details
- Strong understanding of QA processes including ITPs, RAMs, check sheets, and As‑Builts
- Ability to work independently and manage engineering responsibilities on live construction sites
- CSCS Card essential
- SMSTS or SSSTS advantageous
- HND / Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or related discipline preferred
