About the role
I am working with a large civil engineering contractor who operates across major infrastructure frameworks in the UK. They have a strong pipeline of secured work and are continuing to grow, so this is a replacement and expansion hire within their plant and procurement function. The role sits at the centre of operations when it comes to plant and equipment. You’ll be responsible for managing external hire requirements across multiple live projects, making sure sites are getting the right kit, on time, at the right cost, and in line with company standards. It’s a busy role and quite hands-on. You’ll be dealing with multiple requests at once, speaking with both site teams and suppliers daily, and making sure nothing slips that could impact delivery.
What you’ll be doing
- You’ll take ownership of plant hire requests from the point they come in through to completion. That includes speaking with site teams to fully understand what’s needed, when it’s needed and for how long, then going out to the supply chain to source the best option.
- You’ll be getting quotes, comparing suppliers, negotiating rates and putting forward the best commercial option. Once agreed, you’ll raise purchase orders and make sure everything is recorded correctly and in line with company processes.
- A big part of the role is making sure deliveries land when they should. You’ll be chasing suppliers, resolving issues quickly if something goes wrong, and keeping site teams updated so there are no delays on the ground.
- You’ll also be responsible for ensuring the right checks are in place, especially for higher-risk plant, and that all documentation is completed properly for audit and compliance purposes.
- Alongside the day-to-day, you’ll feed back into procurement around supplier performance, pricing trends and any opportunities to improve how things are done.
- There’s also scope to support and guide more junior members of the team.
What they’re looking for
- They’re looking for someone who has worked in plant hire, plant coordination or a similar role within construction, civils or utilities.
- You’ll need to understand how sites operate and what’s required to keep jobs moving.
- You should be comfortable dealing with suppliers and confident having commercial conversations around cost and availability.
- Organisation is key as you’ll be handling multiple live requests at once.
- If you’ve had any involvement in supervising others or supporting a team, that will help, but it’s not essential.
- Experience with CPA terms or working within large frameworks would be useful but again it’s not a deal breaker.
Why it’s worth considering
This is a well-established contractor with a strong order book, so there’s stability in the role. You’ll have real responsibility and won’t just be processing orders all day, you’ll be involved in decisions that directly impact project delivery. There’s also a clear route to progress within procurement and plant if that’s something you’re interested in longer term. The team is well set up, so you’ll have support around you but also the autonomy to run your own workload.
