A qualified electrician is required at HMP Gartree to work in a busy maintenance team. This is a long‑term temporary contract offering full‑time hours and overtime, with the possibility of a permanent role for the right candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a range of structured SFG20‑based PPM tasks, daily, weekly, monthly and annual maintenance tasks, incorporating fault‑finding and reactive work to ensure statutory and mandatory compliance.
  • Complete service sheets and paperwork for PPM and reactive electrical tasks, documenting work details, findings and electrical test results as required.
  • Carry out like‑for‑like replacements and other minor electrical work with the relevant inspections and tests carried out, recording results in accordance with BS7671.
  • Assist the responsible person and authorised person when requested.
  • Ensure that all electrical systems are safe, compliant and functioning effectively, contributing to a secure and well‑maintained environment for staff and residents.
  • Diagnose and replace failed electrical components.
  • Actively fault‑find and problem‑solve on electrical systems across the prison.
  • Assist with escorting duties and other duties as required.
  • Follow MOJ Security protocols, including tool management.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must be a qualified electrician with City & Guilds 2367 or 2357 Level 2 Electrical Installation Works or equivalent BS7671 18th Edition (17th Edition considered with upskilling).
  • Knowledge and experience of Electrical Systems and Electricity at Work Regulations.
  • Good working knowledge of planned and preventive maintenance operations.
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Strong communication skills and basic IT skills.
  • Excellent organisational, time‑management and people skills.
  • Ability to work at heights and independently, using initiative.
  • Understanding of fire alarm and CCTV systems.
  • Must pass MOJ Prison Clearance (passport or photo driving licence required) – clearance can take up to 8 weeks or more and is valid for 5 years.

Additional (desirable): Availability for weekend work on a rota basis and participation in an on‑call rota.

Pay and Working Conditions

  • Pay Frequency: Weekly £28 per hour PAYE.
  • Working Days: Monday to Friday (overtime cover at weekends available).
  • Working Hours: 39 hours per week.
