Portsmouth SEN School – an outstanding Special Educational Needs school catering for pupils aged 3–19 years, all with profound or severe learning difficulties and a diverse range of diagnoses and needs, including Autism and highly complex medical conditions. Academics is recruiting on behalf of the school for a full‑time supply contract Special Needs Assistant. A permanent role may become available if you fit well with the team. The role is a dedicated position supporting pupils’ learning, development and medical needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one‑on‑one and small‑group support to pupils, helping them to achieve learning outcomes.
- Support pupils’ feeding and personal hygiene duties as required by the setting.
- Assist with medical needs and follow the school’s health‑care procedures.
- Use resources such as PECS and Makaton where appropriate – knowledge is an advantage but not essential.
- Maintain high levels of enthusiasm, resilience and care for children who need extensive support.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Empathetic, patient and kind approach to working with children.
- Experience or training in special educational needs is desirable.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, PECS, Makaton and other relevant resources.
Working Hours 8.30 am – 3.30 pm.
Training All training and ongoing CPD will be provided.
