Overview

First Military Recruitment are currently seeking a Manual Machinist on behalf of one of our clients. To undertake machining works as directed by the Department Supervisor and Workshop Manager. Control and operation of the machine shop equipment such as CNC, milling machines, pillar drill and lathes. Our client encourages applications from ex-military personnel however all candidates will be given due consideration.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review samples, drawings or instructions to understand specifications of output.
  • Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job.
  • Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping.
  • Read and interpret CAD drawings in order to select correct machinery.
  • Ability to work from samples.
  • Select appropriate machines (e.g. lathes) and position or load material for a job.
  • Determine and program size of batches, speed of machine etc.
  • Monitor machine while working to adjust the feed, maintain temperature and identify issues.
  • Check output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects.
  • Keep records of approved and defective units or final products.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and repair minor damages.
  • Operation of Lathes, milling machines, slotters, grinders and pillar drill.
  • CNC operation.
  • Ability to read blueprints and measuring devices such as callipers, micrometres and vernier.
  • Understanding and experience with ferrous, non-ferrous, plastics and copper.
  • Maintains safe operation of equipment by adhering to safety protocols and regulations.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Can work on own initiative or as a team member.
  • Batch or single item works.
  • Perform any other duties within your capabilities as directed by the Workshop Manager.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Proven experience as machinist.
  • On Call/Rota availability.
  • Experience working with machine tools or mechanical assembly.
  • Experience in using and/or programming manual, semi-automated or automated tools and machines.
  • Experience with welding and balancing would be beneficial.
  • Ability to use precision tools (e.g. callipers) to take accurate measurements.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics and manuals.
  • Good at math with analytical abilities.
  • Computer skills (MS Office Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of speeds and feeds.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and PPE.
  • Attention to detail with good communications skills.
