Our client is looking for a Rail Design Engineer to join a rapidly expanding in‑house design team specialising in civil engineering and structures projects in the rail sector. This position will be based in Leeds and will play a vital role in the delivery of the long‑term frameworks with key clients throughout the UK.

The Civil & Structural Design team focuses on a diverse range of projects, including bridge reconstruction, upgrades, station work, and infrastructure enhancements. The team consists of experienced specialists committed to delivering optimal design solutions while fostering professional development.
The Role
As a Rail Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the development of technical solutions while ensuring adherence to budgetary, programme, and quality requirements. Your main responsibilities will include:
- Innovative Solutions: Utilise initiative and engineering principles to propose effective solutions.
- Design Development: Challenge project briefs to facilitate innovative engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed design.
- Engineering Checks: Design and check engineering solutions, ensuring robustness and compliance with standards.
- Clear Documentation: Produce calculations, reports, and sketches that are clear and consistent, adhering to current Codes of Practice and Standards.
- Team Communication: Effectively communicate design philosophy and requirements within the team and to external clients and stakeholders.
- Design Representation: Act as the design representative in meetings with project teams and clients.
- Target Appreciation: Understand and appreciate the financial, quality, and programme targets of the team.
- Safety Promotion: Promote safe working practices across all areas of responsibility.
- Project and Staff Management: Manage projects and mentor junior staff, fostering their development and skills enhancement.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Experience: Previous experience as a Senior Design Engineer in a rail project environment.
- Qualifications: Degree in Civil Engineering with IEng/CEng accreditation.
- Project Design Experience: Experience in designing civil engineering projects such as bridges, structures, stations, and platforms.
- Background: Candidates from rail, civil, or structural engineering design backgrounds within client, contractor, or consultancy organisations are highly desirable.
