We are recruiting on behalf of Essex & Suffolk Water for reliable and self‑motivated Meter Readers to join their field team. This is a physically active, outdoor role where you'll be responsible for collecting accurate meter readings, assisting with meter maintenance, and providing excellent customer service. You'll be working independently, planning your own daily routes using a handheld device, and covering a mix of residential and commercial properties.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately collect readings from water meters across your assigned area
- Access meters located both externally and occasionally inside customer properties
- Assist with identifying and reporting faulty meters and supporting exchanges
- Resolve measured supply queries within agreed service levels
- Record additional property details (e.g. vacant homes, properties for sale)
- Maintain high standards of customer interaction and professionalism
- Work efficiently to complete approximately meter readings per week
What You'll Be Doing Day-to-Day
- Pre planning your weekly routes
- Driving to your allocated area using a company vehicle (provided)
- Parking and completing pre-planned walking routes (typically 7-8 miles per day)
- Locating meters in chambers/manholes, sometimes requiring cleaning or pumping
- Inputting readings and notes into a handheld device
- Engaging with customers when needed and directing queries appropriately
Requirements
- Full UK manual driving licence (licence check required)
- Physically fit and comfortable with walking long distances, bending, and lifting
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Strong numeracy and literacy skills for accurate data entry
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and manage your own workload
