About the Opportunity

Our client, a leading Tier 1 engineering contractor within the UK power and utilities sector, is seeking an experienced Electrical Project Manager to support the delivery of a critical National Grid substation project in Melksham. The project is currently at a key delivery stage, and the client requires a proven HV Project Manager with demonstrable experience delivering high-voltage transmission substation projects within live National Grid environments. This role will suit a hands-on Project Manager with strong Tier 1 contractor experience, capable of leading complex HV infrastructure works while managing programme, commercial, safety, and stakeholder requirements across all phases of delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Delivery
    • Lead the delivery of high-voltage substation works within a live National Grid environment
    • Manage all project activities from construction through to commissioning and handover
    • Ensure delivery against programme, budget, quality, and safety objectives
    • Coordinate multidisciplinary delivery teams, subcontractors, and specialist HV suppliers
  • HV Substation & Transmission Infrastructure
    • Manage HV infrastructure projects including substations, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and associated civils
    • Oversee works across transmission-level voltage ranges including 132kV, 275kV and 400kV systems
    • Coordinate outages, energisation activities, and National Grid interface requirements
  • Commercial & NEC Contract Management
    • Manage NEC contract obligations including: Early Warnings, Compensation Events, Programme reporting, Risk management
    • Support commercial performance, forecasting, and cost control activities
  • Health, Safety & Compliance
    • Promote a strong HSEQ culture across all project activities
    • Ensure compliance with CDM regulations, National Grid standards, and site safety procedures
    • Review and manage RAMS, ITPs, permits, and commissioning documentation
  • Stakeholder Management
    • Act as the key interface between the client, National Grid representatives, subcontractors, and internal delivery teams
    • Lead progress meetings, reporting, and coordination activities
    • Maintain strong communication across all project stakeholders during critical delivery phases

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience delivering National Grid or transmission-level HV substation projects
  • Strong background working for Tier 1 contractors within the utilities / energy sector
  • Experience managing projects involving: 132kV, 275kV, 400kV infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of: HV substations, Switchgear, Transformers, Protection systems, Grid connections
  • Demonstrable NEC3 / NEC4 contract management experience
  • Ability to manage live HV construction environments and critical programme milestones
  • Excellent stakeholder management and leadership capability

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • SMSTS
  • CSCS Black Card (preferred)
  • National Grid competencies / authorisations advantageous
  • Full UK Driving Licence
