We are looking for a Principal Engineer - Product Safety to play a critical role in ensuring the safety of complex, safety‑critical engineering systems. You will lead on hazard identification, risk analysis and safety case development, working closely with Technical Authorities to ensure that products meet stringent safety requirements across the full engineering lifecycle. This is a key position where you'll act as both a technical specialist and a thought leader, influencing design decisions and ensuring risks are reduced as low as reasonably practicable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead hazard identification, risk assessment and mitigation activities
  • Develop and maintain hazard logs and safety case arguments
  • Conduct and facilitate HAZID workshops and safety reviews
  • Support Technical Authorities in ensuring safe design solutions
  • Assess product safety across complex subsystems and technologies
  • Review and verify quality and completeness of safety submissions
  • Lead on product safety activities within assigned equipment areas
  • Support and guide junior engineers where required

Skills & Experience Required

  • Strong knowledge of product safety management processes
  • Experience across multiple phases of the engineering lifecycle (LCM)
  • Understanding of through‑life engineering and design integration
  • Familiarity with key safety standards, including:
    • DSA‑02
    • JSP 430
    • Def Stan 00‑56
    • MIL‑STD‑882E
    • BS EN 61508
  • Ability to produce high‑quality technical documentation
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills

About the Team

You’ll join a collaborative Product Safety team working across large‑scale, complex engineering programmes. You may be supporting a major platform programme or working across multiple smaller projects, gaining exposure to a wide range of technologies and engineering disciplines. You will play a key part in supporting Technical Authorities, helping shape safety strategies and ensuring robust safety arguments are developed and evidenced throughout the lifecycle.
