6-month interim role to start in May. Interim CFO / Interim Finance Director for a high-profile public sector organisation facing a significant audit. Provide senior technical finance leadership during a critical audit period.

Responsibilities

  • Senior leadership and technical oversight of the 25/26 Annual Report & Accounts.
  • Lead and manage engagement with external auditors (NAO), including audit planning, issue resolution and final sign-off.
  • Identify, manage and evidence material audit risks and key judgements.
  • Establish clear audit governance and assurance routes, with structured escalation and regular reporting to senior stakeholders.
  • Support the Financial Controller in addressing audit findings, control weaknesses and accounting judgements.
  • Lead management responses and ensure agreed actions are delivered.
  • Capture lessons learned and drive continuous improvement in audit readiness, controls and financial processes.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as an Interim FD or CFO.
  • Strong technical accounting and year-end audit expertise.
  • Confidence operating in regulated or public sector environments.
  • Experience working with the National Audit Office (highly desirable, but not essential).
  • A calm, collaborative leadership style with the authority to challenge constructively.

Assignment details

  • Start: Early May.
  • Duration: Initial 6-month contract.
  • Location: Hybrid – 3 days remote / 2 days on-site.
  • Rate: £600-£800 per day (dependent on experience and level).
