Responsibilities

  • Project management of Civil Engineering schemes, taking full responsibility for all aspects including, but not limited to:
    • Obtaining the full project brief from the client.
    • Acting as Design Team Leader for major projects with high Civil Engineering content.
    • Preparing fee proposals.
    • Ensuring Health and Safety / CDM requirements are met.
    • Liaising with all key stakeholders.
    • Programming and managing resources.
    • Coordinating other RL disciplines to provide a single point of contact / response where necessary.
    • Obtaining technical approvals (where applicable) and ensuring technical specifications and standards are met.
    • Conducting QA and maintaining project deadlines.
    • Delegating work to other staff and checking their work.
    • Financial management of project spend / fee / profitability and identifying where additional fees may be required.
    • Handling invoicing and debt recovery (in conjunction with accounts).
    • Managing and mentoring junior members of staff.
    • Managing a number of projects simultaneously.
    • Maintaining regular liaison with clients to develop good working relationships.
    • Understanding client needs and agreeing on best value technical solutions.
    • Working with internal market leads to promote and sell company services.

Qualifications

  • Ability to make clear and concise engineering decisions even with limited information.
  • Approachable, able to work both in isolation and as part of a wider team.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • Ability to write clear and concise technical reports.
  • Good time management and client management skills.
  • Strong problem solving capabilities.
  • Highly competent user of engineering software including AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroDrainage and XP Site.
  • Robust knowledge of technical approval processes (Section 38 and 278 of the Highways Act, sections 104, 106 and 185 of the Water Industry Act).
  • Good knowledge of Sewers for Adoption, Manual for Streets, Building Regulations, CIRIA 753 and relevant sections of the Water Industry Act, Highway Act and DMRB.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of industry changes, including legislation, regulations, technical standards, innovative products and software updates.
  • Ability to undertake design work at all stages from concept / feasibility through detailed design to construction issue.
  • Ability to design primary infrastructure and understand ground conditions and their implications on Civil Engineering design.
  • Ability to undertake ground modelling and cut / fill analysis for bulk earthworks and Section 278 surfacing.
  • Ability to check own work before passing to a senior member for approval.
  • Good knowledge of Civil Engineering construction principles.
  • Ability to prepare documentation for planning submissions and planning condition sign-off.
  • Good knowledge of the planning process and understanding of other parties involved.
  • Clear understanding of CDM and its application to the role.
  • Ability to review and recommend appointment documents, letters of reliance and warranty documents for sign-off.
