We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Haematology and Blood Transfusion to join our dynamic Blood Sciences Department. You will be required to work across our central laboratory at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and our satellite site at Wycombe Hospital, with deployment to either location as needed to support service delivery.

You will support patient investigations by preparing, storing, and using reagents and consumables appropriately, performing manual laboratory procedures such as precision pipetting, reagent preparation, and complex analytical testing.

Main duties of the job:
  • Process and analyse patient samples across one of the laboratory's four sub‑sections on a rotational basis.
  • Apply current scientific knowledge and advanced methodologies to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
  • Safely and proficiently use complex laboratory analysers, performing routine maintenance and performance checks as required.
  • Operate with minimal supervision, deputising for senior staff when needed, and take responsibility for designated areas within the department according to your specialist expertise.
  • Actively support and participate in the laboratory's Quality Management System to maintain high standards of practice and compliance.
Job Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Calibrate, maintain, operate, and troubleshoot complex laboratory hardware and software to ensure reliable performance.
  • Authorise and release abnormal laboratory results, adding appropriate technical comments and escalating clinically significant results to senior staff or medical teams as required.
  • Participate in audits, internal quality assurance programmes and research and development activities as directed by Senior or Head Biomedical Scientists.
  • Support and train junior staff, trainees and Associate Practitioners, including mentoring, assessing competence and deputising for senior staff when needed.
  • Manage departmental stock control, ensuring adequate levels of chemicals, reagents, consumables, blood and blood products, maintaining accurate records, rotating stock appropriately and using time‑sensitive items within their expiry dates to minimise waste.
  • Participate in out‑of‑hours duty rosters, making autonomous decisions while working unsupervised to process urgent samples and maintain service delivery 24/7.
Person Specification & Qualification:
  • HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientist with Haematology/Blood Transfusion experience.
  • Proficient with Sysmex, EPU and Winpath Enterprise.
  • Skilled in complex lab procedures and QC testing.
  • Knowledge of stock management and lab safety.
  • Committed to CPD and professional standards.
