Location: Newham

Rate: 26.13 per hour (PAYE) or 34 per hour (Umbrella)

Contract: 3 months with likelihood of extension thereafter

About the Role

We are seeking a politically astute, proactive professional to provide high-level support to the Mayor. This is a hands-on, politically focused role, offering a unique opportunity to work at the heart of local government and support high-profile engagement at local, regional and national levels. You'll play a key role in supporting the Mayor across political, communications and stakeholder activity, helping shape messaging, manage priorities and ensure effective delivery of council business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support in managing political aspects of role as Mayor, including providing political advice and briefings on issues
  • Supporting the Mayor in external engagement activity, locally, regionally and nationally, including drafting newsletters, press releases and speeches/identifying speaking opportunities
  • Supporting the Mayor on political representations and handling for key Council business, including Cabinet and Full Council
  • Provide insight, reporting and recommendations to support decision-making

About You

  • Proven experience working in a political environment (e.g. political party, MP's office, council political role)
  • Strong understanding of political processes and governance
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to draft clear, engaging and politically aware content
  • Experience supporting senior stakeholders, ideally politicians or elected members
  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience
  • Confident, proactive and able to work in a fast-paced, high-profile environment
