Please find below an overview of the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine Project, a major infrastructure scheme currently underway in the North of England, where opportunities have become available for skilled engineering professionals.

The project involves the full upgrade of the A66 between Penrith (M6) and Scotch Corner (A1[M]), spanning approximately 80km. The scheme will convert remaining single carriageway sections to dual carriageway, improve key junctions, deliver bypasses, and enhance route safety and resilience.

Key highlights of the scheme include:

  • Dualling of six existing single carriageway sections to improve capacity and journey times
  • Enhanced safety and reduced congestion along a key strategic east-west freight corridor
  • Significant civil engineering challenges across environmentally sensitive and complex terrain
  • Integration of modern delivery methods under the Project Speed initiative
  • Commitment to environmental standards, with biodiversity net gain and carbon reduction targets
  • A long-term, nationally significant project offering excellent professional development potential

The scheme recently received Development Consent Order (DCO) approval, allowing it to progress into full delivery. With a value of approximately Β£1.3 billion, the A66 project is one of the largest road upgrades currently being undertaken in the UK
