The Company
We are a rapidly growing startup developing solutions that utilise Virtual Agents to handle manual customer and marketplace operations tasks. Virtual agents blend deterministic Python code, LLM reasoning and agentic AI capabilities to undertake this work, along with a fallback to human experts. Our unique approach combines the strengths of human expertise (high accuracy and nuanced decision‑making) with the advantages of AI automation (speed and cost efficiency). This cutting‑edge technology helps businesses solve real‑world challenges in trust & safety, and beyond, without the need for complex technical integration. We believe in an online world free from harm, where we can trust AI to make safe and fair decisions. We have raised about $25M in VC funding from top‑tier funds, including Creandum and Plural, and operate at significant scale – analysing millions of daily images and videos from 10+ Enterprise customers. But we are just at the beginning of our journey – and we are very excited about our plans for growth over the coming year and beyond!
The Role
We are looking for a Platform Engineer to help build and scale the platform that powers Unitary's Virtual Agents: AI workers that automate complex workflows for insurers and online marketplaces. A key part of this role involves working closely with our ML Engineers to improve the systems that make our Virtual Agents reliable and scalable. You'll work on everything from CI/CD pipelines to cloud infrastructure, ensuring our platform can grow with the demands of our customers.
Responsibilities
- Design and build reliable, scalable, production‑ready infrastructure for AI agents
- Identify opportunities to optimise infrastructure costs, ensuring we use cloud resources efficiently as we scale
- Optimise the CI/CD pipelines that build and deploy microservices so we can release to production with confidence
- Participate in our 24/7 support rotation, typically on‑call for one week every 10 weeks or less
- Debug issues across the stack, from cloud infrastructure to Kubernetes clusters, and document solutions for the team
Requirements
We are looking for someone who is excited about building innovative solutions and wants to have a large impact in a smaller company; you will be a key part of defining Unitary's future during this early stage of our new product strategy. We need versatile people who are happy to get stuck into whatever needs doing, and are ready to learn and grow with the company. For this particular role, we need a proactive platform expert who can work independently to make our infrastructure, services, and procedures highly resilient. You will be ready to dive straight into solving problems, both technical and operational, and can demonstrate an ability to adapt to new technologies in a fast‑paced start‑up environment. You embrace a customer‑first mindset in a role that directly impacts their experience through platform availability and reliability.
We would love to hear from you if you:
- Have knowledge of provisioning, managing and scaling AWS infrastructure (including EKS, S3, IAM)
- Are confident in developing robust CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitLab CI/CD), and optimising DevOps procedures and processes
- Have experience of troubleshooting containerised microservices (Docker, Kubernetes) and knowledge of how to configure and deploy them
- Have worked with API services and production systems, including knowledge of maintaining service uptime and automated scaling
- Have experience collaborating with ML or Data Science teams to productionise AI systems and models
It would be even better, but not essential, if you:
- Have experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Temporal
- Are familiar with event‑driven systems, ideally AWS SQS
- Are experienced with Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform)
- Have experience writing production code in languages such as Go or Python
- Have knowledge of how to automate training and deploy AI/ML models (MLOps)
This role can be placed anywhere within 3 hours of the UK time zone.
Benefits
We are committed to creating a positive and inclusive culture built on genuine interest in each other's well‑being. We offer progressive and market‑leading benefits, including:
- Flexible hours and location
- Competitive salary and equity package
- Occupational pension
- Generous paid parental leave
- Generous paid sick leave
- Annual budget for your professional development and growth
- Annual budget for your individual health and wellness
- Three team off‑sites to London or other exciting destinations in Europe
As the role requires joining a 24/7 on‑call support rotation, there will be additional compensation for these shifts.
