The Company
Unitary’s purpose is to make the internet safer to improve lives and create a fairer world. We are a rapidly growing start-up developing best-in-class AI models that automatically detect and classify harmful content online. Our AI combines the strengths of human moderation (accurate video classification) with the benefits of automated detection (speed and scalability). This cutting-edge technology will help us solve real-world problems in content moderation and beyond. We believe in an online world free from harm, where we can trust AI to make safe and fair decisions.
We have raised about $25M in VC funding from top-tier funds, including Creandum and Plural, and operate at a significant scale – analysing millions of images and videos daily from the world’s largest platforms. But we are just at the beginning of our journey – and we are very excited about our plans for growth over the coming year and beyond!
The role
As the Engineering Lead, you will own and shape components throughout our engineering architecture. We rely on your senior expertise to set the standard for our software engineering practices. Working in a start-up requires lots of hands-on work, which, in your case, involves diving deep into our code. Simultaneously, you apply strategic thinking to assess and develop our software function for long-term success. Your role could eventually manage the growth of our software team and include aspects such as people management; however, initially, your hands-on approach as an individual contributor will be the most appreciated contribution to our engineering team.
As part of this role, you will:
- Set the technical direction and strategy of our Software Engineering function
- Work closely with Machine Learning Engineers and Platform Engineers in hands-on building of scalable and efficient solutions
- Guide and mentor members from a community of backend developers, providing guidance and support alongside their Engineering Manager to ensure high-quality delivery
- Establish practices and standards that lead to great software being built
- Balance your time between hands-on development, architecture knowledge, and production support
- Stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and best practices in software engineering
Requirements
You
We are looking for someone who is as excited about Unitary’s mission as we are, who wants to have a large impact at an early-stage startup, and be a key part of defining Unitary’s future as one of our early employees. We need versatile people who are happy to get stuck into whatever needs doing, and are ready to learn and grow with the company.
For this particular role, we need an Engineering Lead who can help others deliver through the standards and practices they set as well as be a hands-on contributor. Our stack is currently developed in Python, but we’re investigating moving some parts of our architecture to Go for scalability.
We would love to hear from you if:
- You know what great software builds look like
- You have experience fostering standards and cultures that create great software
- You can help others adopt the highest quality practices
- You can lead by doing, being hands-on and showing others the way
- You have experience working in cross-functional teams with Machine Learning practitioners
- You are proficient in Python and Go
- You understand core devops concepts and are familiar with contemporary cloud deployment practices
- You enjoy working with a remote, international team spread across different countries and time zones
- You can travel to London four times per year (quarterly in association with company offsites)
It would be even better, but not essential, if you have:
- worked with image and video data before
- understand machine learning principles and patterns
- have a working knowledge of Spark
- You have experience developing low latency production systems
This role will report to the VP of Engineering and can be placed anywhere within 3 hours of the UK time zone.
