The role
As a Health & Safety Coordinator, you’ll work closely with the Staff Health and Safety Officer to ensure UNISON is compliant with legislation, promotes best practices and maintains high safety standards across all locations.
You’ll be playing a crucial role in protecting our employees, contractors and visitors while supporting the organisation's commitment to creating a safe working environment.
Your responsibilities will include providing regional health and safety support and monitoring compliance across multiple UK locations and supporting risk assessments.
In addition you will help to develop, tailor and deliver training programmes and communications.
You will also assist in incident management and reporting, responding to or escalating helpdesk queries, maintaining documentation, systems and records.

- What we’re looking for…
- Good experience in a health and safety support role, ideally across multiple sites or regions.
- NEBOSH General Certificate or an equivalent Level 3 health and safety qualification – plus, ideally, technical membership of IOSH.
- Good understanding of UK health and safety regulations, ACo Ps and Guidance.
- Knowledge of how to interpret health and safety law and apply it sensibly in a complex organisational setting – including situations where requirements are open to judgement or must be balanced with operational needs.
- Understanding of how health and safety operates within a trade union or member‑led organisation, including the role of policy, governance, campaigning and internal accountability – ideally with specific knowledge of trade union operations.
- Knowledge of incident investigation techniques, reporting procedures and auditing processes – plus experience of working within a helpdesk provision.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage with employees at all levels.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities, while also collaborating with and mentoring others.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel and Word – plus, ideally, health and safety management software systems.
