Compliance Coordinator in Felixstowe

Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

George Baker are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Customs Compliance Specialist to ensure the highest standards of regulatory compliance across our import operations. In this role, you will be pivotal in auditing import declarations, executing post-clearance actions, supporting the expansion of our offshored auditing functions, and acting as a subject matter expert for both internal teams and external clients.

Key Responsibilities:

Auditing & Quality Assurance:

• Perform rigorous post-import auditing on import declarations to ensure accuracy, regulatory adherence, and proper duty/VAT application.
• Standardize audit processes, compile reporting metrics, and present results and actionable findings to management.
• Support the transition, ongoing training, and quality monitoring of offshored declaration auditing teams.

Post-Clearance Management & Dispute Resolution:

• Lead post-clearance actions, including preparing and submitting amendments, voluntary disclosures, and duty recovery applications.
• Monitor, track, and manage post-clearance applications through to resolution with customs authorities.
• Investigate, resolve, and root-cause compliance discrepancies or HMRC / authorities' queries.

Client Onboarding & Query Support:

• Onboard new clients by reviewing master data, customs documentation, and establishing compliant operational workflows.
• Serve as a key point of contact for daily trade queries from clients, operational teams, and external regulatory bodies.

Training, Development & Process Improvement:

• Design and deliver targeted training sessions to internal staff and clients on customs compliance best practices and regulatory updates.
• Identify process efficiencies and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the compliance function.
• Support ad-hoc customs projects and cross-functional business needs as required.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

Essential:

• Proven experience in customs compliance, import declarations, and post-clearance procedures.
• In-depth knowledge of customs legislation, Incoterms, tariff classification, valuation rules, and duty relief regimes.
• Proven track record in auditing declarations and managing complex post-clearance applications.
• Experience delivering training or onboarding external clients and operational teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with a client-focused problem-solving approach.
• High proficiency in data analysis, reporting, and attention to detail.

Desirable:

• Experience working with or overseeing offshored compliance / audit teams.
• Relevant industry qualifications (e.g., UKWA, BIFA, Institute of Export & International Trade, or equivalent customs certifications).
• Proficiency with industry-standard customs broker software and ERP systems.
