Uniper is looking for an individual with the right background to develop the knowledge and experience for undertaking structural integrity assessment and analysis work in the Power Generation sector. We welcome any candidate who will contribute to our safety record managing the integrity of pressure systems and rotating equipment (gas and steam turbines) and towards methods of maintaining their reliability and extending their operating life. The role contains significant opportunity for individuals to demonstrate creative problem solving approaches in a field where numerous engineering disciplines apply.
Your responsibilities:
- Delivering structural integrity and structural analysis related assessments to the business.
- Supporting the development of projects in tandem with other team members.
- Working with a high degree of autonomy including the execution, if required, of any and all computer modelling, independent calculations.
- Production of written reports, to a high standard of English containing the appropriate advice for the customer.
- Proactively driving through projects to completion.
- Liaising with customers and colleagues, such as inspection teams, to obtain necessary information for the assessments.
- Delivering projects and work assignments to time and quality and within an agreed budget.
- Providing assessment of defective components, which may include, but is not restricted to pressure vessels, pipework, headers and drums, valve bodies, steam chests, rotors, blades, gas turbine components.
Your profile:
Uniper are looking for a candidate to fill a development role but will consider applicants at different stages in their career development including individuals who are highly experienced. The successful candidate is therefore likely to possess the following:
- A successful candidate will have an engineering degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical or equivalent (candidates with a Physics degree will also be considered provided that they have the relevant experience, but Civil / Structural Engineering candidates will not be considered).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills including the preparation of detailed technical reports and presentations.
- Experience of using finite element, i.e. Abaqus / Ansys (Abaqus preferred), or the ability to develop this skill quickly within the role.
Development Role Candidates:
- It is expected that the successful candidate will be due to complete / have completed a PhD / EngD in a subject area that involves detailed assessment of materials, components or structures from a materials, structural or integrity perspective. This will ideally include significant experience of either finite element modelling and / or fracture mechanics / fatigue and creep life damage analysis.
- Alternatively, a development role candidate will be considered if the candidate is at a relatively early stage in their career that includes delivering finite element and fracture mechanics based assessments of components following appropriate fitness for service guidelines. Ideally, the assessment experience will include components operating in the creep regime.
- In addition to the above, ideally the successful candidate’s experience should have been built working with components from pressure parts, gas turbine or steam turbines, i.e. components relevant to the advertised role.
Experienced Candidates:
- It is expected that the candidate will have experience that includes successfully delivering finite element and fracture mechanics based assessments of components following R6 / R5 procedures, or equivalent, e.g. API 579 / ASME FFS-1, BS 7910 and / or associated software packages. Critically the successful candidate is expected to be able to work as a self-sufficient practitioner requiring limited or no supervision.
- Ideally the successful candidate’s relevant experience should have been built working with components from pressure parts, gas turbine or steam turbines.
- Additionally, a minimum of half of the candidate’s relevant experience should ideally include the delivery of integrity assessments for components operating in the creep regime.
Desirable for experienced candidates:
- Chartered Engineer status
- Knowledge of conventional Power Generation (Coal and / or Gas-fired plant)
- Experience of undertaking Remaining Life Assessments of pressure parts and rotating plant
- Able to interpret and extract relevant information from engineering drawings, design calculations and NDT defect reports
- Coding knowledge, e.g. Fortran, Visual Basic
