Description

Train Crew employees are responsible for providing the safe and timely movement of customers' freight. Previous railroad experience is not required as we provide all necessary training.

As you progress in your career, you may have the opportunity to apply for engine service (fireman's class) and become a Class 1 Locomotive Engineer.

In your initial year of service, you can expect earnings of around $80,000. As you advance, there is potential for higher earnings, with median annual wages of employees with five years of service reaching over $100,000. Each employee is entitled to medical insurance covering prescriptions, as well as vision, dental, life, and disability insurance.

What Should You Know

  • Changing seniority locations and/or crafts (moving from train crew to mechanical or engineering) are approved based on business demands and may not be granted. Plan to commit to your craft and work location for a minimum of 2 years.
  • The training class lasts 14 weeks and includes classroom and on-the-job training. Attendance and successful completion of all exams are required for continued employment.
  • Post-training, you will work either road or yard service based on your seniority and territory.
  • Road service crews may need to work between two locations, requiring them to stay away from their home terminal. Lodging is provided by Union Pacific.
  • Yard and local service crews work with an engineer or via remote control, classifying and building trains.
  • This is a seniority-based position. You may be required to cover locations within your seniority area, which could be distant from your hire or residence location. Lodging may or may not be provided.
  • You may be on call 24/7, and paid time off during your first year is limited to sick days.
  • Furloughs are possible depending on business volume, based on seniority.
  • Union Pacific enforces a strict drug and alcohol policy, including random and post-accident testing.

Accountabilities

  • Inspect equipment, locomotives, and rail cars for safety.
  • Perform coupling, aligning drawbars, operating remote control locomotives, applying/releasing hand brakes, riding rail cars, replacing couplers, and communicating with crews and dispatchers.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and prepare necessary reports.
  • Follow all safety, operational, and FRA regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications - Required

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean record in the past 36 months, without drug or alcohol-related suspensions or incidents.
  • No involvement in diversion, probation, or guilty pleas related to drug or alcohol driving incidents.
  • No refusal to undergo drug or alcohol testing related to vehicle operation.
  • Complete an English assessment before the interview.

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Experience on 2nd and/or 3rd shifts.
  • Experience outdoors in diverse weather conditions.
  • Experience with heavy equipment in motion.
  • Experience in confined spaces and at heights.

Physical and Mental Job Requirements

  • Pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT).
  • Normal color vision and adequate depth perception.
  • Ability to lift up to 85 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to work at heights, walk long distances, and respond to sensory signals.

Work Conditions

  • Travel with trains, possibly overnight.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Variable hours, on call, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship.
