Overview
Job Title: Formulation Design Chemist
Location: Leeds office R&D
Job Purpose
This role focuses the development and testing of new deodorant formulations for global/regional rollout.
Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver the technology development and testing programme for projects and/or the longer-term technology roadmap, ensuring all testing is completed to meet network timings and/or project brief.
- Address formulation/product issues as they arise (e.g., fragrance and formulation instability).
- Act as the main formulation contact at a global level, handling technical queries from other areas of the business (GDCs, regions, marketing, SEAC, Supply chain).
- Understand the functions of raw materials and their role within specific formulations. When required, under guidance of senior WL1s, adapt and develop new formulations delivering into the formulation workstream that meet product benefits and requirements (e.g., claims on the brief).
- Formulate safely and autonomously, plan and execute technical testing, interpret results, troubleshoot issues, confirm product integrity, support claims, prepare reports, communicate results to the team, and contribute to margin optimisation initiatives.
- Provide supporting documentation (e.g., safety clearance) for prototype products for internal and external testing, including consumer/claims testing.
- Carry out qualitative and quantitative technical testing, including consumer and specialist testing; digitise results, analyse and interpret data.
- Become fluent in using new and established Unilever digital tools and contribute ideas to improve digital capabilities.
- Understand key competitors in the applicator area and develop formulation expertise to interpret implications for Unilever products/brands. Be aware of tools for protecting intellectual property when reporting information.
- Keep laboratory files/records, SOPs, risk assessments, COSHH, etc., up to date. Design and implement new protocols and testing techniques with guidance from senior WL1s.
- Communicate effectively with different functional areas to ensure deadlines are met. Attend and contribute to technical team meetings with guidance from senior WL1s or WL2s.
- Participate in departmental initiatives, maintain high standards of laboratory housekeeping and safety. Support training and provide technical support for colleagues.
- Prepare relevant documentation for laboratory technicians (e.g., batch sheets, gassing sheets, results templates) for data capture in Unilever software.
Experience
- Graduate caliber β Degree in Chemistry preferable with some laboratory experience in formulation development.

- Formulation Chemistry β Understanding of ingredients; ability to modify and manipulate formulations.
- Evaluate and understand interactions between ingredients within formulation/process/pack.
- Analytical capability β analyse and interpret data.
