The Radar Systems Analyst is responsible for assessing, modelling and developing concepts for radar and radar related systems. The role includes generating new system design ideas, building performance models for current and future architectures, supporting research and development activities, and contributing technical expertise across multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- System Analysis and Concept Development
- Analyse existing radar and radar related systems to understand capabilities and limitations.
- Propose and explore new radar system concepts.
- Develop performance and behaviour models for candidate and legacy radar systems to enable design decisions.
- Modelling and Algorithm Development
- Build mathematical models of radar systems and subsystems using tools such as MATLAB, Simulink and Mathcad.
- Design and develop digital signal processing algorithms for radar applications.
- Provide design data and model outputs to hardware and software teams.
- Contribute to detailed specifications that support equipment development.
- Validation and Technical Support
- Assist with the validation of hardware and software developed from system models.
- Conduct detailed performance analysis, including interpretation of trials data, and produce technical reports for internal and external use.
- Support wider research and development teams with specialist radar knowledge.
- Liaise with subsystem suppliers to ensure design and performance requirements are satisfied.
- Collaboration, Communication and Leadership
- Play a key role in shaping new radar system developments.
- Prepare and present technical material to customers and external organisations.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, providing clear technical guidance.
- Undertake additional tasks aligned with the role as required by leadership.
- Travel
- Regular UK and overseas travel may be required, including at short notice.
Essential Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
- Practical experience with MATLAB and digital signal processing.
- Working knowledge of radar or closely associated fields such as sonar, image processing or communications.
- Proven ability to complete analytical and design tasks within agreed budgets and timescales.
- Effective team worker with strong initiative.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Experience and Knowledge
- Techniques such as pulse compression, Doppler filtering, CFAR and detection.
- Radar video or image processing, plot extraction and target tracking.
- Phased array radar principles.
- Embedded software, Linux based development or FPGA based systems.
- RF, antenna or radar electronics.
- Systems engineering or project oriented research backgrounds, including publications or patents.
- Familiarity with laboratory test and debug work.
- Programming experience in languages such as Python or C.
