Job Overview
The SHEQ Manager is responsible for maintaining and continually improving UNICAT Technologies’ Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) and Quality Management activities, as directed by and supported by the MD Technologies and the Divisional HSE/Quality Managers. This primarily office-based role in Huddersfield provides hands-on support to sales, engineering, and project implementation teams, including periodic UK and potential international travel, to help ensure safe working practices, legal compliance, consistent quality standards, and effective delivery across customer sites and internal operations.
This role is majority office-based in Huddersfield, UK, with occasional UK and international travel required to support sales, engineering, and project implementation teams at customer locations. Travel frequency will vary depending on project needs and can usually be planned in advance.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Own and develop the local HSE management system, procedures, and safe systems of work aligned to applicable UK legislation and relevant international requirements for customer sites and UNICAT requirements.
- Actively develop AI Augmentation systems to facilitate the reduction or removal of repetitive tasks whilst enhancing the quality of processes/reduction in risk.
- Provide competent HSE support to the Managing Director, managers, engineers, and project implementation teams.
- Plan and deliver HSE support for projects, including risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), permit-to-work interfaces, and site readiness reviews.
- Lead incident/near-miss reporting, investigation, root-cause analysis, corrective/preventive actions, and learning communication.
- Coordinate and verify contractor and supplier HSE requirements, including competence checks and onboarding where required.
- Develop and deliver HSE training/briefings (e.g., inductions, toolbox talks) and maintain training records.
- Maintain a HSE system and support external/customer audits when applicable.
- Conduct internal inspections and audits (office, workshop/manufacturing, and site activities), track actions to closure, and report performance trends.
- Support emergency preparedness and business continuity arrangements relevant to operations and project work.
- Maintain HSE KPIs and dashboards; prepare management reports and contribute to the Monthly Management Performance Review.
- Promote a positive safety culture, behavioural safety, and proactive hazard identification.
Quality
- Own and improve the local Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure consistent delivery and continual improvement across projects and operations.
- Define and maintain quality procedures, inspection/test plans, and document control (including templates and records) for project delivery.
- Actively develop AI Augmentation systems to facilitate the reduction or removal of repetitive tasks whilst enhancing the quality of processes/reduction in risk.
- Support sales, engineering, and project teams with quality planning, supplier quality, incoming inspection (as applicable), and final handover documentation.
- Manage nonconformances, customer complaints, corrective actions, and preventive actions; verify effectiveness of actions.
- Lead internal audits such as ISO 9001 and support external/customer audits and certification audits when applicable.
- Work with engineering and operations to ensure quality requirements are embedded in design, manufacturing/assembly, installation, commissioning, and service activities.
- Monitor and report quality KPIs (e.g., defects, rework, audit findings, customer feedback) and drive improvement initiatives.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Essential
- NEBOSH certificate.
- 5 + years’ HSE experience in an industrial or engineering environment, with the ability to operate as the competent HSE point of contact.
- Relevant qualifications such as a relevant degree, or IOSH certifications, and practical experience in health and safety.
- Working knowledge of UK HSE legislation and practical application of risk assessment and safe systems of work.
- Experience managing Quality and HSE Management systems in accordance with business and ISO standards.
- Experience supporting operational teams and projects, including site work and interface with clients/contractors.
- Strong communication, influencing, and coaching skills with the confidence to challenge unsafe practices.
- Ability to analyse incidents/nonconformances and drive corrective actions through to completion.
- Competent with Microsoft Office and maintaining controlled records and management system documentation.
- Valid UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Experience working in manufacturing environments, including high-risk industrial settings such as steel, glass, and chemical manufacturing.
- Experience supporting process automation and control systems projects, including installation and commissioning activities.
- Knowledge of CDM Regulations and working within construction/industrial installation environments.
- Internal auditor qualification and/or experience with integrated management systems (HSE & Quality).
Measures of Success
- Reduction in incidents and high-potential near misses; timely close-out of investigations and actions.
- Strong audit performance and effective control of HSE and quality risks across all aspects of UNICAT Technologies.
- Consistent quality delivery with reduced rework/nonconformance and improved customer satisfaction.
- Positive engagement from teams and evidence of a continual improvement culture.
