In 2025, UNDO was named one of four global winners of the $100M XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition, recognising enhanced rock weathering (ERW) as a carbon removal pathway and UNDO as a scientific leader in this field. As UNDO’s Head of Science, you’ll be a core member of UNDO’s senior leadership team, accountable for our scientific strategy and delivery across various initiatives including:
- Developing and proving new approaches to evidence and quantify CDR at scale, complying with current standards while influencing future standards.
- Creating detailed protocols and processes for UNDO’s operations team and other project developers to implement these approaches successfully.
- Supporting projects by tailoring UNDO’s approaches to new regions and deployment scenarios, providing scientific support, and analysing measurement data for successful verification.
This role requires a scientific background to collaborate with senior scientists, review their work, and ensure the robustness and credibility of our science.
Where you’ll spend your time:
- Leading the science team, collaborating with our Chief Product Officer on the delivery roadmap, and fostering an environment for our senior scientists to thrive.
- Project management: working with our product team on a roadmap that delivers maximum value and ensuring accountability for team delivery.
- Connecting deep science with the wider business: aligning with executive strategy, representing Science at key forums, informing strategic decisions, and increasing scientific literacy across the team.
- Owning the strategy for continuous development and improvement of our quantification approach and the calibration and validation of our geochemical model.
- Collaborating with our Head of Carbon to align with existing ERW verification methodologies and influence future methodologies.
- Supporting platform partners from feedstock and site characterisation to verifiable MRV design and ongoing scientific support.
- Managing the departmental budget, balancing financial sensibility with scientific investment.
- Assisting with due diligence, financing/grant applications, investor relations, and contract reporting where expert scientific detail is required.
- Staying current with the latest scientific advancements and industry trends in geochemistry and enhanced weathering.
We’d love to see from you:
- Expertise in a related field (geochemistry, plant sciences, soil sciences, geology, hydrology), including industry or commercial deployment experience.
- Proven experience managing a team, delivering against business objectives while maintaining scientific rigour.
- Strong ability to translate R&D into deployable protocols and processes, ensuring projects yield required outcomes.
- Proven effectiveness as a cross-functional communicator, translating scientific concepts into actionable insights and building high-trust relationships.
- A balance of strategic and operational rigour, keeping the big picture in mind while focusing on critical areas.
- Passion for environmental sustainability and addressing climate change.
Working environment:
We have a hybrid working model - remote-friendly with an office in Waterloo, London, and a lab space in Kingston, Ontario. There will be a need for in-person meetings with key stakeholder groups such as the Science team and SLT (quarterly offsites) or the executive team (as needed). We recognise the importance of in-person time together and aim to gather the whole team annually for connection.
