A leading UK law firm is looking for a skilled Data Protection Officer to oversee and maintain the firm’s compliance and relevant regulatory frameworks.

This Data Protection Officer role offers the opportunity to work closely with Partners and junior lawyers within a collaborative, high‑performing team. The position is based in the firm’s London office, with flexible working arrangements available.

Key Responsibilities for the Data Protection Officer role:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the firm’s data protection policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Provide specialist guidance on appropriate and lawful use of personal data within AI tools and emerging technologies.
  • Monitor developments in UK and international data protection legislation and ensure the firm’s policies, procedures, and guidance are kept up to date.
  • Manage the firm’s response to Subject Access Requests and other rights‑based data enquiries, ensuring timely and compliant outcomes.
  • Lead on data breach management, including assessing reported incidents, recommending remedial action, and identifying ways to strengthen internal controls to reduce recurrence.
  • Advise teams across the business on data protection and PECR considerations for new projects, operational changes, marketing activities, and day‑to‑day queries.
  • Track patterns or emerging risks in data breach reporting and escalate significant concerns to the Data Compliance Officer.
  • Oversee the relationship with the firm’s appointed EU Data Representative, including coordination of the annual renewal process.
  • Lead on internal data protection training and awareness initiatives for legal and business services teams.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Degree‑level education or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a Risk & Compliance role within a law firm environment.
  • Strong knowledge UK Data Protection Laws.
  • Ability to influence and build strong working relationships with Partners, senior stakeholders, and junior team members.
