Requirements
- At least 3 years of full-time commercial Ruby on Rails experience working in teams of more than 2 people.
- Strong Ruby and Ruby on Rails skills.
- SQL experience, with PostgreSQL or MySQL preferred.
- Experience with Git and version control workflows.
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and accessibility standards.
- JavaScript and TypeScript experience.
- Cloud infrastructure experience, with AWS preferred, for out-of-hours support on a rota basis.
- Experience with continuous integration and delivery.
- Strong collaboration, communication, adaptability, curiosity, and comfort with uncertainty and complexity.
- Familiarity with agile ways of working and a GDS-style delivery environment.
- Experience with user research, designer collaboration, open source contributions, UNIX systems, and AI tools is welcomed.
- UK residency and the ability to work in our London office and on client site at least 2 days a week.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain Ruby on Rails applications across Discovery, Alpha, Beta, and Live phases.
- Work directly with designers to turn designs and prototypes into functional, accessible products.
- Participate in user research sessions and help decide what to build and why.
- Write and maintain automated test suites as part of normal delivery.
- Review and adapt existing codebases, including legacy systems.
- Work with Git, version control workflows, and continuous integration pipelines.
- Contribute to and consume modern APIs.
- Apply strong security practices, especially when handling personal or public data.
- Make products accessible by default, following WCAG standards.
- Present work in show and tells to clients and stakeholders.
- Review technical colleagues' pull requests kindly and constructively.
- Adapt to new technologies and workflows, including AI coding tools.
- Keep up to date with relevant technology developments and share knowledge with the team.
- Provide out-of-hours support on a rota basis when required.
