The Clinical Social Worker and Coordinator for University Health Services Counseling Center will provide high quality, time-effective, evidence-based and culturally responsive clinical services, including: triage; emergency and crisis intervention services; referrals and evaluations; as well as individual and group counseling and psychotherapy, with a special focus on responding to the needs of multicultural students. The incumbent will manage a caseload so as to serve the maximum number of students who are appropriate for services at the University Health Services Counseling Center; and will consult with and/or make timely and appropriate mental health referrals for students as needed. Some extended day or evening hours may be required.

Examples of Duties:

  • Provide high-quality, time-effective, evidence-based, culturally-responsive clinical services, including triage, emergency and crisis intervention, referral, as well as individual and group counseling and psychotherapy, with special attention also to multicultural students;
  • Produce and maintain excellent and timely clinical records and participate in quality management activities, in accordance with University Health Services policy;
  • Manage a clinical caseload so as to serve the maximum number of students who are appropriate for services at the UHS Counseling Center;
  • Consult with and/or make timely and appropriate mental health referrals to other professional staff of the University Health Services, as well as to other departments or professionals on- or off-campus, as appropriate to meet students’ needs, with special consideration to developing relationships with providers who can best serve multicultural students;
  • Serve as a specialized consultant and resource person for faculty and other University staff about counseling programs and services available to students, including those available to multicultural students; collaborate with and consult with university departments to coordinate planning programming and primary intervention with multicultural students; consult internally to staff within UHS and the Counseling Center;
  • Apply practice knowledge of the mental health best practices for multicultural students in outreach and consultation efforts;
  • Conduct culturally responsive outreach efforts for all students and evaluate their effectiveness;
  • Participate in the development of programming to meet changing student needs and requests;
  • Liaison with University faculty, staff and other personnel in order to be informed of and participate in campus activities which might be supportive of students’ needs;
  • Maintain statistical records and submit, as required, reports on activities;
  • Serve as back-up for other Counseling Center staff members, as necessary, such as by providing emergency or triage coverage when a staff member is absent;
  • Keep current on clinical practice and supervision practices relevant to this setting and population, including themes of risk assessment, Black identity development, culturally-responsive treatment, and addressing and decreasing stigma;
  • Use assessment to evaluate the institutional ability to support student care, connection, and success efforts;
  • Provide high-quality and culturally responsive supervision of trainees;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited Clinical Social Work Education (CSWE) program, with emphasis on clinical social work, and current Massachusetts licensure as an Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) is required.
  • A minimum of three-five (3-5) years of experience post-licensure delivering evidence-based and culturally-responsive crisis intervention, evaluation, and treatment to young adults and/or adults is required.
  • Specialized experience providing mental health services to diverse cultural groups is required.
  • Experience working in a college or university counseling center and/or experience providing services through the continuum of care (i.e. inpatient, partial hospital and outpatient) and proficiency in a second language other than English are preferred.

The following are required skills and abilities:

  • Expertise in conducting suicide/homicide risk assessment and intervention, crisis intervention and stabilization, case management, care coordination and work with high risk/high acuity clients;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and skill in delivering high-quality, time-effective, evidence-based and culturally-responsive evaluation and treatment including triage; crisis and emergency assessment and intervention; individual, couples and group counseling and therapy; and referral and consultation;
  • Demonstrated experience in providing services to populations typically underserved by traditional counseling centers such as LGBTQ populations, persons of color, immigrant or refugee populations, ethnic minorities, and first generation students;
  • Demonstrated commitment to best practices within the profession and within the college aged population;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Timely and high-quality clinical documentation;
  • Familiarity and evidence of ability to use an electronic medical record system and standard office productivity software;
  • Demonstrated ability to functionally use standard office productivity software such as Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Demonstrated capacity to relate effectively and harmoniously with students, faculty, staff and administrators, within the organizational and administrative structure of a university counseling center, University Health Services and academic departments;
  • Demonstrated ability to flexibly manage the professional demands of a challenging caseload while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships;
  • Adherence to standards of care and best practices;
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment;
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills.

The following are preferred skills and abilities:

  • Specialty training and experience in areas relevant to the UMass Boston student population;
  • Involvement in efforts to increase student retention, persistence and graduation;
  • One-two years of experience in teaching and training clinicians;
  • Experience in accreditation process and maintenance, such as APA, AAAHC, JCAHO, or IACS.
