Your Role

As an AI Scientist, you will carry out applied research on novel AI‑based solutions for automated analysis of medical images and other types of data relevant to healthcare. You will work within the AI Research Team to support the science and innovation that will underpin next‑generation products using deep learning, computer vision, mathematics, statistics and machine learning methods. Your work will keep the company at the forefront of ground‑breaking research. In this role, you will focus on designing, implementing and evaluating an LLM‑driven multi‑agent pipeline that orchestrates clinical guidelines, third‑party tools, in‑house models, and local analytics to automatically analyse echocardiographic studies, produce structured clinical reports, and support interactive clinician review/clarification.

Your Responsibilities

  • Independently lead, and carry out research to characterise and address problems related to echocardiography image analysis, and deliver results in a timely manner.
  • Develop new algorithms and computational tools for AI‑enabled medical image analysis involving image quantification, disease detection, etc.
  • Document research findings, experiments, and results clearly and concisely.
  • Write research papers for publication and abstracts for international conferences.
  • Keep up to date with the latest advances in AI, deep learning and medical imaging and utilise these techniques in your research.
  • Work closely with clinical scientists, AI engineers and other teams.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering teams to transfer research outputs and code into the commercialisation process.
  • Review research code created by other team members.
  • Review documents, designs, and colleagues' code, providing constructive feedback.
  • Follow good information governance practice throughout this job role and ensure compliance with Ultromics information security and data protection policies.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Machine Learning, Image Analysis, AI, computer science or equivalent research experience.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and scientific libraries such as PyTorch, scikit‑learn, Pandas, etc.
  • Experience with software development tools (e.g., git).
  • Strong presentation, writing and communication skills.
  • Analytical skills – ability to structure and process qualitative or quantitative data and draw insightful conclusions.
  • Creative, innovative mindset: generates new solutions to problems.
  • Effective teamwork and strong collaborative spirit.
  • Strong background in deep learning for vision and/or language: transformers, multimodal architectures, sequence/video models.
  • Good experience with large language models (LLMs), agentic AI, prompt engineering and tool‑calling patterns.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and passion to apply innovative ideas to real‑world problems.
  • Strong research track record in the field.
  • Adaptability and flexibility – adjusts quickly to changing priorities and conditions.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Background in medical imaging.
  • Hands‑on experience building multi‑agent systems or agent frameworks that orchestrate tool calls and reasoning.
  • Experience with vision‑language foundation models and video‑to‑text summarisation for clinical use cases.
  • Prior publications in medical imaging, multimodal LLMs, or agentic AI.
  • Understanding of risks involved in use of sensitive information in AI.
  • Experience with project management tools (Jira, Confluence, etc.).
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure for training and deployment of AI models.
  • Experience in a venture‑capital‑backed start‑up or scale‑up environment.
