This full-time Legal Counsel position is based onsite in our London, UK office, with a hybrid model of 3 days in-office and 2 days remote. Applicants must have legal authorization to work in the UK, as Ultralytics does not provide visa sponsorship.
As Legal Counsel at Ultralytics, you will be the cornerstone of our legal operations, providing strategic guidance across the company. You will protect our innovations while ensuring we adhere to the highest legal and ethical standards. Key responsibilities include:
- Open-Source Licensing: Serve as the primary legal advisor on all matters related to open-source software. You will manage compliance for our AGPL-3.0 licensed software and guide the company on the use of other open-source components, in line with standards from the Open Source Initiative.
- Commercial Contracts: Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including our Enterprise Software License, partnership agreements, and vendor contracts to support our solutions.
- Intellectual Property Management: Develop and execute strategies for our IP portfolio, including managing our global trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets related to models like YOLO.
- Data Privacy and Compliance: Ensure our products, including Ultralytics HUB, comply with global data protection regulations like GDPR and the EU AI Act. You will maintain and update our Privacy Policy.
- Product Counseling: Provide legal guidance to our engineering and product teams during the development lifecycle to mitigate legal risks and ensure our AI innovations are built on a solid legal foundation.
- Dispute Resolution: Manage and advise on any potential IP infringement claims, commercial disputes, and other legal challenges.
- Legal Research: Stay ahead of emerging legal issues and regulations in AI ethics, explainable AI, and technology law to inform company strategy.
Skills and Experience:
- Qualified solicitor or barrister in the UK or a Commonwealth jurisdiction.
- 5+ years of legal experience, with a preference for in-house counsel at a high-growth technology or AI company.
- Deep expertise in open-source software licensing, particularly copyleft licenses like AGPL-3.0, and permissive licenses such as MIT and Apache 2.0.
- Strong command of intellectual property law, including trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
- Proven experience with data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA) and drafting privacy policies.
- Expertise in drafting, negotiating, and managing complex commercial contracts and technology transactions.
- Ability to provide clear, practical legal advice in a fast-paced, high-intensity environment.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills to collaborate effectively with technical and business teams.
