The predicted salary is between 800 - 1400 € per month.

Please note, this training post will be located throughout Ultracardiac community facilities within the County of Cornwall. The successfully appointed candidate will be expected to travel to various locations within the County to complete the training programme and the programme is not offered from one single site. Occasional travel to the main centre in Plymouth is also required. A valid driving licence and willingness to travel is therefore a requirement of the role.

The trainee will work closely with the Training Lead and more senior members of staff to follow the curriculum for the Echocardiography Training Programme. The trainee will work in specified areas of the department and be responsible to the Designated Training Leads for their own work and progression through the scheme. All trainees will be expected to travel to national academic and other courses regularly throughout their training. Trainees will undertake a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Echocardiography at a designated academic institution specific for the training pathway.

The trainee will undertake the full training programme in order to progress through the academic and practical elements of the training scheme. In doing so they will learn how to perform and interpret clinical and specialist scientific processes underpinned by theoretical and applied knowledge and practical experience.

Main duties of the job

The Trainee will learn how to:

  • Perform and interpret routine cardiac investigations.
  • Perform specialised diagnostics investigations.
  • Carry out complex scientific and clinical roles, including those working directly with patients.
  • Carry out audit to continuously improve patient care and service needs.
  • Communicate and interact effectively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure a positive patient experience.
  • Assist the Cardiac Physiologists and other senior members of the team in the day to day organisation and delivery of the diagnostic services.

They will be expected to complete all work-based training and assessment alongside the academic course to exit the programme with eligibility for Accreditation with the BSE and be working towards, or have achieved, registration with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS). Trainees must meet the AHCS Standards of proficiency for Healthcare Science Practitioners.

In addition, they will be expected to undertake work-based experience to enable them to communicate complex technical, scientific and sensitive information to colleagues within their department in both verbal and written forms.

Job responsibilities

Based in Cornwall, with regular travel around community sites, and to the academic institution:

  • Successfully complete the training and assessment programme in conjunction with the local Training Coordinator and designated Academic institution to achieve certified competence awarded by the BSE.
  • Maintain knowledge of recent scientific developments and undertake supplementary training to develop both knowledge and skills.
  • Attend mandatory training (both vocational and academic) as required.
  • Participate in internal and external assessment processes.
  • To carry out any other reasonable duties to achieve learning and experience that may be required, which are commensurate with the grade and nature of the post.
Person Specification

Qualifications

  • A 1st or 2:1 undergraduate honours or integrated masters degree in Cardiac Physiology (PTP).
  • A 1st or 2:1 undergraduate honours or integrated masters degree in a scientific or healthcare subject - this must include relevant modules either in human physiology and anatomy or in physics. Examples include but are not limited to: Pure or Applied Physics, Human Biology, Sports Science, Nursing and Radiography.
  • A 2:2 undergraduate honours degree in Cardiac Physiology (PTP) plus relevant cardiology experience. HEI approval must be obtained to confirm acceptance.
  • A 2:2 undergraduate honours degree plus a relevant higher degree (excluding MSc in Echocardiography).
  • An alternative or vocational qualification plus sufficient and relevant experience and appropriate underpinning knowledge and skills in cardiology, as evidenced by registration on the Academy for Healthcare Science Accredited Healthcare Science Practitioner Register. HEI approval must be obtained to confirm acceptance. Please note that any applicant entering via this route must have the registration in place before the start date of the ETP. Applicants who do not hold registration by the start date will not be able to commence the programme and may have any offer withdrawn.
  • If the applicant has previously completed a post graduate qualification in Echocardiography, then they are not eligible for the ETP.

Experience

  • Experience of working within a patient facing role.
  • Good working knowledge of IT Microsoft Packages such as Word, Excel, Outlook and other relevant programmes.
  • Experience with recording and interpreting electrocardiograms.
