Ultra Maritime UK is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to deliver and support robust mechanical engineering solutions across our Sonar programmes. This role combines strong mechanical design and problem solving expertise with technical leadership responsibilities, supporting the review process, product testing and production support. The ideal candidate will have experience in either defence or aerospace environments, thrive in multidisciplinary teams, and be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to engineering excellence, technical integrity, and continuous improvement.

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering high‑quality mechanical engineering solutions, supporting the engineering team capability, and maintaining high standards. You will work closely with Project Managers, project teams, and domain specialists to deliver reliable, mission‑critical products and systems. The position is based at our London office in Greenford.

Design and Technical Responsibilities
  • Deliver Mechanical Design Solutions: Provide design, and delivery of high‑integrity mechanical systems and assemblies for marine defence applications, including structural, thermal, dynamic, and environmental considerations.
  • Produce detailed mechanical designs, including concept generation, CAD modelling, tolerance analysis, materials selection, and design for manufacture.
  • Produce and review mechanical drawings and specifications in compliance with relevant standards.
  • Support the fast‑paced prototyping development, with qualification, and acceptance activities, working closely with test, manufacturing, and systems engineering teams.
Technical Assurance and Design Reviews
  • Participate in design reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR, etc.), ensuring mechanical engineering deliverables meet internal quality standards, customer requirements, and applicable certification and compliance obligations.
Lifecycle and Product Excellence
  • Promote Design for Manufacture, Assembly, Cost, Reliability, Test, and Supportability throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, production, and supply chain teams to optimise robustness, producibility, and cost effectiveness of mechanical designs.
  • Support input into formal 8D and root‑cause analysis activities to resolve quality issues and prevent recurrence.
  • Drive continuous improvement in mechanical design practices, tools, and engineering discipline.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration and Project Support
  • Work closely with Systems, Software, Electronics, Manufacturing, Quality, and Programme teams to ensure integrated and aligned engineering delivery.
  • Provide mechanical engineering input to bids, proposals, and customer engagements.
  • Support project delivery across all phases, ensuring engineering risks, issues, and dependencies are clearly identified and managed.
  • Ensure compliance with export controls, safety standards, and defence accreditation requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Strong design experience, delivering complex products within highly regulated environments.
  • Mechanical engineering expertise: demonstrable experience delivering mechanical designs and structures for demanding environments, ideally within defence, aerospace, or similarly regulated industries.
  • Design skills: strong experience with 3D CAD, materials selection, and PLM drawing management.
  • Technical leadership: provide technical leadership in key internal/external stakeholder meetings.
  • Stakeholder engagement: confident communicator, able to work effectively with internal teams, suppliers, and customers.
  • Quality and governance focus: structured, organised, and quality‑driven, with experience working within formal engineering processes.
  • Resilience and adaptability: comfortable managing multiple priorities in dynamic project environments.
  • Academic qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Professional registration: Chartered Engineer (CEng) preferred, or working towards professional registration.
  • Mindset: proactive mindset, able to work as a key member of a team, plus operate autonomously with defined tasks.
