Job Description

  • Provision of engineering leadership and management of concurrent engineering to ensure that assigned projects and tasking are delivered to scope, cost and schedule.
  • Responsible for executing the engineering delivery of projects of a variety of sizes in accordance with business, management and technical processes.
  • Lead all project engineering activities and the team, aligned to ISO 15288 and ISO 24748 processes, defining and continuous implementation of a systems approach.
  • Effectively delegate responsibilities, monitoring and managing progress to achieve the scope of the engineering to satisfaction of the budget, schedule and governance stakeholders.
  • Assure and govern the implementation and application of engineering in accordance with the agreed plans and processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own, lead and assure the execution of agreed scope of engineering for delivery of projects of a variety of sizes/scale.
  • Leads, defines, delegates and monitors the tasking and the dependencies relating to engineering activities distributed across the multi-discipline project team.
  • Ensure a systematic approach across all required disciplines in the project team.
  • Support the Program Management team in the planning and scheduling of their project; propose optimisations to schedule logic that improve schedule.
  • Proactively work with wider business stakeholders, especially governance, to ensure processes are followed/tailored agreements are implemented upon and maintained.
  • Continuous realisation of resource and dependency needs to permit upskills, supply and recruitment; working with the discipline leads to ensure that resource/capability requirements are agreed; provide input to longer term recruitment/supply strategy (skills and/or tooling gap identification etc.); adapt to manage resource problems on project to achieve budgets.
  • Ensure that project engineering artefacts are delivered to an agreed governance level/maturity, to budget and schedule; seamlessly identify and implement solutions to remedy overspend or schedule slip; strive to beat schedule and improve margin.
  • Quickly and clearly raise resource concerns or any other project constraints risking value/success; propose and manage solutions.
  • Articulate and quantify technical risks on the project; actively manage their mitigation to minimise risk to project within the schedule.
  • Coordinate all engineering resources on the project; delegation of day-to-day tasking.
  • Provide any input required for business and customer reporting; propose improved means of monitoring and reporting (metrics); represent the company on their project with customers, suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Oversight of change, scoping the potential impact, risks, dependencies, benefits and costs. Work with stakeholders to achieve change agreements.
  • Effectively resolve any concerns with other dependent functional domains (e.g. production engineering, test facilities); optimise business needs across all functions.
  • Work with the resource stakeholders to support development of the team via tasking opportunities and knowledge sharing, resulting in growth, greater efficiency and resilience.
  • Not necessarily a technical expert, but sufficiently knowledgeable of the Systems Engineering life cycle and sufficiently technically competent to manage technical teams to completion of work packages.

To deliver the required value and contribute towards the growth of the business a suitable candidate for this role shall have:

  • Demonstrate full knowledge of the Systems Engineering lifecycle, V and numerous development models (Iterative, Incremental etc).
  • Proven engineering management, technical leadership and mentoring skills, with experience of overseeing a team of a minimum of 10 multi-discipline engineers.
  • Experience of strategy, planning and design of complex solutions, as either standalone capability or for integrating in/with other systems.
  • Confident in quantifying Basis of Estimate costs for pursuits and change opportunities.
  • Proven Systems Engineering techniques/methods, i.e modelling, to quantify and capture capability use and employment, resulting in a needs definition.
  • Identify project growth and development opportunities from internal and external influence.
  • Experience engineering lifecycle tools and their use to manage the work, configuration management, traceability and support the generation of metrics.
  • Excellent, multi-method and tool, Customer/Stakeholder engagement skills and communication techniques.
  • Experienced in creating work breakdown structure, with a value basis, where the realisation of the required artefacts achieves internal process and external contract commitments.
  • Support external engagement, with travel, to both customer and supplier meetings, as the team lead and a key project/business representative.
  • Ensure and assure the delivery of all agreed products throughout all Life Cycle phases across one or more assigned projects.
  • Hands-on expertise in a number of the following areas: Command & Control Defence systems, sensors, communications, encryption, land/maritime/airborne capability.
  • Demonstrable experience in delivery of proven regulated/legislation aligned solutions within UK Defence/Aerospace industry.

Additional Role requirements:

  • Able to travel within UK.
  • Significant on-site presence to support classification of work and maximise team contribution.
  • Valid Driving license.
  • Holding SC and willing and able to obtain, and maintain, DV security clearance.

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance for the role. Due to the nature of our work, you must be a British Citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past 5 years in order to apply for SC clearance and 10 years for DV.
