Job Description
UL Solutions is searching for a Laboratory Technician for the EMC (Electro‑Magnetic Compatibility) team in Basingstoke. This is an entry‑level/early career position, ideally suited to someone who has gained around 12 months of testing experience in a similar environment.
Ideally, this would be experience of EMC testing, but we would also like to hear from candidates who have gained experience in testing Radio (RF) products, cellular, medical devices or other safety‑related product testing.
You will be responsible for supporting and carrying out testing and certification of the latest consumer technology, to ensure compliance with relevant EMC standards.
Our EMC & wireless technology labs in Basingstoke are state‑of‑the‑art, recently expanded and re‑built. You will have the opportunity to work with the latest laboratory technology in a close‑knit, friendly team‑first environment.
Our full‑service EMC laboratories, equipped with state‑of‑the‑art semi‑anechoic chambers, hold important accreditations and are recognised by various regulatory bodies.
Responsibilities
- Set up and perform equipment and test setups for clients; build or adapt setups for performance of tests.
- Examine test samples and read blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, measuring instruments, and operational instructions.
- Follow defined test plans and datasheets.
- Evaluate test performance and sample operation to accurately interpret results.
- Record and explain test results and complete test reports.
- Build or adapt setup and test equipment to new situations based on data sheets and instructions from engineering staff.
- Examine simpler customer samples and learn to operate appropriate tests with necessary supervision; communicate with customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation.
- Operate designated machines and special laboratory equipment; perform routine maintenance and occasional basic calibration of test equipment.
- Read and understand specific test standards and testing technology for scope of responsibility with necessary supervision.
Qualifications
- Approximately 12 months of hands‑on testing experience (ideally EMC testing) combined with an engineering/science‑based qualification.
- A genuine interest in technology; understanding of IT, radio technologies such as cellular, WLAN, Bluetooth and testing equipment (spectrum analysers, signal generators) is highly desirable.
- Good verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail, as the role involves generating technical reports.
- 12 + months of experience in EMC safety product testing such as radio, wireless communications, medical devices, etc.
- A university degree or vocational qualification in engineering, aeronautics, science or electronics is desirable.
- Knowledge and experience of laboratory test concepts and reporting would be ideal.
- Exposure to relevant national and international regulatory requirements and standards.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong time‑management skills to meet customer deadlines.
