Role Overview
Ground Control is looking for an experienced Environment & Sustainability Manager to join the business on a 12-month maternity cover contract. This is a key role within our HSQE function, supporting the delivery of our environmental strategy and ensuring compliance across our UK and Ireland operations.
What you’ll do
- You will play a central role in embedding sustainability across the business, supporting our Net Zero commitments, biodiversity initiatives, and environmental performance improvement.
Responsibilities
- Supporting the delivery of Ground Control’s environmental and sustainability strategy
- Leading initiatives across biodiversity, environmental protection, and sustainable land management
- Supporting carbon reporting and reduction plans aligned to Net Zero and PAS 2080
- Ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, permits, and client requirements
- Supporting audits, inspections, and environmental assessments
- Providing practical environmental guidance to operational teams
- Supporting tenders, bids, and client submissions as a subject matter expert
- Promoting environmental awareness and best practice across the business
Qualifications
We’re looking for someone who combines strong technical knowledge with the ability to influence across a multi-site operational business. You must be prepared to be hands on as you will need to get involved at both strategic and operational level. You must currently have or be very close to gaining PIEMA qualification as a minimum ideally with a degree in Environmental Science or similar. Any experience within utilities, rail, infrastructure, or environmental services is a real bonus as well as knowledge of carbon reporting, Net Zero programmes, or PAS 2080. You will also need familiarity with ISO standards and environmental management systems.
- Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation and sustainability principles
- Experience in an environmental or sustainability role, ideally within a field-based or operational environment, focused on the outdoor environment
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Experience supporting audits, compliance processes, or environmental assessments
- Ability to interpret legislation and translate it into practical, operational guidance
- Willingness to travel across the UK & Ireland as and when required
