Overview
Two Personal Care Assistants are needed on a part-time basis (5 to 10 hours per week) for a 16-year-old male with Autism, a significant learning disability and limited verbal communication. There are existing support workers, but additional support is required to cover holidays. The role is based in Cramlington. Apply at UKCIL.com. Reference: b767e0af.
Responsibilities
- Provide 2:1 support for the young person to access age-appropriate activities in the community (e.g., bike rides, swimming, beach and park visits).
- Assist with the young person’s limited ability to communicate verbally.
- Support with personal care when required; male workers are preferred but not essential.
- Use visual prompts (PECs and communication books) and continue their use in the home and community.
- Supervise to ensure safety, manage anxiety in busy places, and respond to distress; maintain a high level of supervision due to limited awareness of risk.
Person Specification
- Positive understanding of young people with disabilities and genuine interest in working with those with complex needs.
- Ability to respond positively, sensitively and effectively to challenging behaviours.
- Knowledge and experience of working with young people with very limited verbal communication skills.
- High initiative, punctuality, reliability and flexibility; able to work with a caring, confidential approach.
Hours
- 5 hours per week in term time weeks and 10 hours per week in all school holiday weeks.
Rate of Pay
- £13.74 per hour.
- Holiday entitlement is 5.6 weeks per year pro-rata.
- Out of pocket expenses to be paid by employer.
Requirements
- Car driver required and must be insured for business use.
- The successful candidate will require an Enhanced Certificate of Disclosure (DBS), cost to be met by employer.
