Personal Assistant required for a disabled young man in Bishopston. We are looking for a reliable, confident, and proactive Personal Assistant (PA) to support a young person at home and in the community. This role aims to promote independence, safety, and enjoyable access to meaningful activities.
About the Role
You will support a family with a young adult who has additional needs. He is non-verbal, uses PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), and responds well when called by his first name and to prompts, modelling, and basic spoken commands. The PA should feel confident engaging with a young adult who uses alternative communication methods. He can point and vocalise his needs.
Main Duties
- Support the child with arts and crafts and use of his iPad.
- Support and supervise accessing the community: walking, playing football, cycling, and trampolining.
- Provide assistance crossing the road and with road safety.
- Help with steps as he cannot judge depth.
- Navigate to and from his home.
- Support to route plan and become familiar with his local area.
- Support with sensory overload when he is out in the community; he needs reassurance.
Essential Criteria
- Experience of working with autism and ADHD.
- Must have use of own vehicle.
- The PA must have previous care experience supporting children or young people with additional or communication needs.
- Confidence with visual communication systems (such as PECS), de-escalation, and supporting an energetic child in community activities is essential.
Personal Qualities & Attributes Required
- Responsible, reliable, and trustworthy.
- Excellent timekeeping.
- Some previous PA experience would be advantageous.
