We are looking for a caring and enthusiastic personal assistant (PA) for our 15 year old son who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He is a full time wheelchair user and has weakness in his muscles, so needs someone to assist him with all aspects of care.
We have 6 hours funded from the local authority. The core times we need are Wednesday and Thursday 3-6pm. However, we can be flexible especially during school holidays. We are also interested in the occasional evening or weekend support, so could move hours around or fund additional hours personally.
He lives with his mum, dad and Doris the cat in the Headingley LS6 area of Leeds and attends a local mainstream school in year 10. He is a chilled out, creative young man who likes gaming, learning new things, art, animals, films (sci-fi/action), Lego, going to hydrotherapy, trying different foods and having fun, despite his physical disability. He is doing quite well at school and seems to enjoy it.
Assistance is needed to be his "arms and legs" so he can engage in activities he enjoys as well as with personal care such as dressing, washing, using the toilet, food and drink preparation. We have all the equipment needed in our house including a ceiling track hoist system.
When the weather is good he also likes to go out into the local park in either his powered or manual wheelchair and needs someone alongside him for this. It's also important the PA is someone he can get along with and trust - he is an easy going young man, can be shy to start with but soon warms up to people. Much of the support would be within our house but there would also be scope to support out and about.
Ideally, the PA would have a full driving license so they can be insured to drive our wheelchair accessible car.
