Independent Contractors – Rail Technical Assessors / Experts

UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service)

UKAS is the National Accreditation Body for the United Kingdom. We’re currently expanding our network of independent Technical Assessors and Experts with rail industry knowledge to support assessments in line with ISO/IEC standards and relevant EU and UK rail regulations.

We’re particularly keen to hear from people with technical knowledge or experience in any of the following areas—you don’t need to cover all of them:

Technical Areas of Interest:

  • Common Safety Method on Risk Evaluation & Assessment (CSM-RA)
  • EC Verification under the Rail Interoperability Directive
  • Certification of Entities in Charge of Maintenance (ECM)
  • Engineering Change to Rail Vehicles (RIS-2700-RST)
  • ISO/IEC 17024 Certification of Persons

We’re looking for specialists in one or more of the following rail sectors:

  • Rolling Stock
  • Control Command & Signalling
  • Infrastructure
  • Energy
  • Operational / Organisational Change
  • Comms & Software
  • ECM
  • PRM
  • Safety in Rail Tunnels
  • Certification of Competence

Please note: you do not need to have experience in all these areas—expertise in just one area is welcome.

What we\’re looking for:

  • Engineering background (degree level or equivalent)
  • A strong understanding of applicable technical standards (e.g. TSIs, EN standards, RIS, GMRT, etc.)
  • Practical experience in the rail industry—typically 5+ years
  • The ability to assess competence and conformity in line with ISO/IEC standards
  • Knowledge of the relevant EU and UK regulations relating to rail system safety, interoperability and certification

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Prior experience as a Lead Assessor to ISO/IEC 17020, 17024, 17065 or 17021-1 Clause 9
  • Familiarity with accreditation processes or UKAS assessment procedures
