Electrical Calibration – Contracted Technical Assessor

About the role
UKAS is the national accreditation body for the United Kingdom, responsible for evaluating and accrediting organisations that provide conformity assessment services, including certification, testing, inspection, and calibration.
We are expanding our network of independent Electrical Calibration Technical Assessors to support accreditation and surveillance activity across electrical calibration laboratories and related calibration scope areas.
As a contracted Technical Assessor, you will evaluate conformity assessment bodies to ensure electrical calibration activities are conducted competently, consistently, and in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025, UKAS requirements, M3003 and relevant technical guidance. Assessments may include desk reviews, on-site inspections, witnessed assessments, and post-audit reviews.
This is a flexible, remote role with some travel required.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking technically credible electrical calibration professionals with extensive hands-on experience who can confidently evaluate how organisations implement calibration methods, uncertainty evaluation, quality management systems and technical controls in practice.
You will assess conformity assessment bodies conducting electrical calibration activities across defined parameters, which may include DC, low frequency, RF and microwave, time and frequency, high voltage, EMC-related calibration, taximeters, transducers or related specialist areas.
You will be expected to demonstrate strong practical expertise, typically supported by higher education in a relevant electrical, electronic or mechanical engineering discipline, Incorporated Engineer status, a science degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience, and the ability to question, challenge, and evaluate technical decisions during assessment.
Relevant methods, areas or specialisms may include one or more of the following:
- Electrical, DC, low frequency, high voltage, RF or microwave calibration
- Measurement uncertainty evaluation and application of relevant UKAS guidance
- Time and frequency, EMC, antenna, transducer, sensor or accelerometer calibration
- Calibration laboratory quality systems, including ISO/IEC 17025 environments
- Safe working practices, statutory requirements and relevant industry guidance
You will be able to evidence:
- Extensive experience working in electrical calibration or a closely related calibration discipline
- Strong understanding of calibration methods, measurement limitations and appropriate application
- Experience overseeing procedures, equipment, personnel competence and technical records
- The ability to review technical documentation, records and evidence critically
- Clear, concise reporting and sound technical judgement
Practical calibration experience is essential; applicants with less than five years’ practical calibration experience are unlikely to be suitable.
Typical Backgrounds
This role is suited to experienced electrical calibration professionals who have operated at a senior technical or oversight level. Typical backgrounds may include:
- Senior electrical calibration engineer or specialist
- Technical manager, quality manager or laboratory manager within a calibration laboratory
- Electrical, electronic or RF calibration consultant
- Specialist working within an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration environment
- Senior practitioner with practical experience in electrical, electronic, RF, EMC or related calibration activities
Experience may have been gained within calibration laboratories, engineering organisations, specialist technical services, conformity assessment bodies or related industrial environments, provided it demonstrates strong technical depth and independent technical judgement.
