UKAS is seeking skilled, independent Technical Assessors to support its accreditation activities in assessment of fire testing across a number of sectors including construction, marine, aerospace, automotive, rail and consumer products. This contract role suits professionals with experience of fire resistance and reaction to fire testing and wishing to apply their expertise independently or alongside other employment (with employer approval).
As a Technical Assessor, you will evaluate organisations involved in testing, calibration, inspection, and certification, ensuring they operate competently and consistently to international standards. Your work will uphold the integrity of conformity assessment, supporting UKAS’s mission to build confidence in accredited services and ensure technical operations, equipment, and personnel meet required standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct technical evaluations of organisations involved in fire protection testing and certification.
- Assess compliance with relevant standards, including those supporting CE marking and Directives.
- Review testing methodologies, equipment, and environmental controls used in fire resistance, reaction to fire and fire protection assessments.
- Evaluate the influence of testing parameters on result uncertainty and commercial implications.
- Provide expert feedback on conformity with any regulatory frameworks and harmonised European product standards.
- Understand the fire behaviour of products in various sectors including construction products, marine, aerospace, automotive, rail and consumer products.
- Familiarity with current fire resistance, reaction to fire and fire safety testing.
- Knowledge of supporting sciences and calibrations required for assessment of fire tests such as temperature, humidity, force, linear measurements etc.
- Awareness of the commercial impact of test results and their reporting.
- Appreciation of test result uncertainty and its application to test data.
- Up-to-date knowledge of evolving British, European and International product and test standards.
Additional Qualifications & Skills
- Knowledge of working to IEC/ISO 17025:2017 would be an advantage.
Experience
- Experience will typically have been gained in:
- Commercial testing laboratories
- Insurance underwriting organisations
- Research and Development laboratories.
- Specialist knowledge of at least one market sector detailed above.
Training
- Attendance at relevant short courses would be useful.
- Extensive practical training will have been undertaken.
- Application of ISO 17025 awareness would be advantageous.
Professional Standing
- No mandatory qualifications or memberships required.
- Training will be provided as needed.
- Membership of any Chartered Institutions is not a requirement.
- Involvement with a BSI or CEN technical committee, EGOLF or FTSG could be advantageous.
Other
- Good interpersonal skills and other non‑technical attributes of a good assessor are a prerequisite for this work, as is responsiveness to deadlines.
