We’re looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Android Software Engineer to join our growing Engineering team based in Wigan. This is an exciting opportunity to work on customer-facing mobile products that are central to the Tote consumer experience. You’ll be part of a collaborative, forward-thinking engineering function that embraces modern Android development practices and continually evolves its technology stack.
Reporting to the Software Engineering Manager, you’ll play a key role in shaping the quality, performance, and scalability of our Android applications while contributing directly to meaningful business outcomes.
What you’ll be doing:
In this role, you’ll be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining our Android mobile application, which is written entirely in Kotlin and built using Google’s modern UI framework, Jetpack Compose. You’ll work across a variety of Android applications and SDKs, developing new features and enhancing existing functionality to continually improve the user experience. You’ll take ownership of the full software development lifecycle, from early insight and technical design through development, testing, integration, deployment, and ongoing operational support. Writing high-quality, fully tested code will be central to your role, using a test-driven mindset and a combination of unit, screenshot, and end-to-end Espresso tests to ensure reliability and performance.
You’ll collaborate closely with Senior Software Engineers, Product Owners, and other stakeholders to contribute directly to the design and delivery of intuitive, high-performing consumer experiences. Working with both REST and GraphQL APIs, you’ll help enable seamless data flows and responsive interactions across the application. As part of a self-organising Agile engineering team, you’ll actively participate in ceremonies, provide clear visibility of progress, and help champion engineering best practices across the business. You’ll also be involved in troubleshooting and investigating production issues, ensuring timely diagnosis, mitigation, and resolution to maintain a high-quality service for users.
Beyond hands-on development, you’ll support and mentor Junior Software Engineers and Apprentices, contributing to specification analysis, software design discussions, code reviews, documentation, and testing cycles. You’ll take accountability for delivering innovative, scalable, and secure software solutions that meet both technical standards and business objectives, while continuously maintaining and expanding the existing codebase and exploring opportunities to introduce new solutions that analyse and utilise data effectively.
What we’re looking for:
We’re looking for a skilled Android engineer with a strong foundation in mobile app development and hands-on experience building applications using Kotlin. You’ll have a solid understanding of Android architecture components, coroutines, and Flow, alongside a good working knowledge of Gradle and Material Design principles. You’ll be comfortable applying clean architecture and SOLID principles to create maintainable, well-structured code, and you’ll take pride in writing clean, robust, and efficient solutions.
Experience working in an Agile environment is essential, as is familiarity with continuous integration systems and modern development workflows. You’ll have a strong awareness of the importance of security, scalability, and system capacity, and you’ll naturally consider these factors when designing and implementing solutions. We’re looking for someone who enjoys problem-solving, communicates effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and is passionate about continuous personal development and staying up to date with emerging technologies. Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) would be advantageous, but not essential.
