Our Sustainability practice collaborates with clients and project partners to integrate successful green solutions into the planning, design, construction, and operation of buildings, reducing their environmental impact at every stage of their life cycle. Our experienced team offers sustainable design strategies, energy analysis, green building certification consulting, sustainability analysis, and upgrades for existing structures, along with education and training.
Thornton Tomasetti is seeking a passionate team player to join our Sustainability & Resilience team in London as an intern to assist with building analytics projects – from whole‑building energy modelling to embodied carbon life‑cycle assessment for projects across the UK and internationally. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and architects, supporting a variety of active sustainability‑focused projects. This is a full‑time internship for three months during the summer, based in our London office.
Responsibilities
- Developing building geometry/models to assess daylight, glare, energy, comfort
- Energy and building regulations research
- Analysis and calculations to support net‑zero studies and/or Passive House studies
- Reviewing architectural and structural systems, and liaising with MEP teams where these relate to sustainability and resilience strategies
- Reviewing existing project drawings and related documents for use in LCA and analytics tools
- Preparing presentations and visualisations (PowerPoint or similar)
- Collaborating and coordinating with other TT teams (e.g. Sustainability, Structures, Façades)
- Providing general assistance with project management and documentation
Requirements
- Currently studying for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in engineering (civil, structural, mechanical, environmental) or architecture – or a closely related built‑environment / sustainability discipline
- Strong academic record and genuine interest in low‑carbon design, whole‑life carbon and building performance
- Comfortable with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and able to work with drawings and models
- Familiarity with CAD/BIM tools (e.g. AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino) is an advantage
- Any experience with the following is a plus, but not essential:
- One Click LCA or other LCA tools
- Energy or daylight modelling tools (e.g. IESVE, EnergyPlus, Grasshopper / Ladybug tools)
- Bluebeam, InDesign or other graphics/layout software
- UK and international sustainability frameworks (e.g. LETI, RIBA 2030, BREEAM, LEED, Passive House, London Plan Whole Life‑Cycle Carbon / Circular Economy guidance)
